Description
Goma-chan is a baby seal discovered by Ashibe and his family. Mistaken at first for a large fish meant for eating, the family identifies him as a seal pup upon closer look and decides to keep him as a pet. His name comes from Ashibe's father recognizing him as a "gomafu" seal species.
Physically, Goma-chan resembles a small white harp seal. He has black eyes with distinctive white pupils, small eyebrows matching the width of his eyes, and three thin black whiskers on each side of his mouth. The area around his mouth is light gray, turning pink when open. Despite his size relative to Ashibe, he is light enough to be carried easily under one arm.
Goma-chan shows an affectionate and playful nature. He nuzzles Ashibe's face upon meeting him and forms a strong attachment, following Ashibe constantly, including to school and throughout daily routines. He makes a unique high-pitched sound written as "Kyu!" and performs practical tasks like acting as an alarm clock by slapping family members awake.
His central role is as Ashibe's companion across all settings. He integrates fully into Ashibe's family life, school environment, and neighborhood. At school, he interacts positively with other children like Yuma and Mao. Goma-chan remains a constant presence through Ashibe's life stages depicted in sequel manga: "ComaGoma" (Ashibe in second grade), "Shō 3 Ashibe QQ Goma-chan" (Ashibe in third grade), and "Seishōnen Ashibe" (teenage Ashibe in high school).
No significant physical changes or personality developments occur for Goma-chan across the original manga serialization (1988-1994), the 1991-1993 anime adaptations, or the 2016-2019 "Go! Go! Goma-chan" anime series spanning 120 episodes. His core characteristics and role as Ashibe's devoted companion stay unchanged throughout all official media.
