Description
Tanya von Degurechaff originates as an unnamed Japanese salaryman working in human resources during 2013. After being murdered by a disgruntled employee he fired, he encounters a divine entity calling itself "God," which he mockingly terms "Being X." Rejecting its existence despite witnessing its power, he argues that faith arises only from suffering. Being X reincarnates him into an alternate early-20th-century Europe resembling World War I-era Germany with integrated magic. He is reborn as Tanya Degurechaff, a blonde-haired, blue-eyed orphan girl abandoned at a church-run orphanage in the Empire.
Tanya retains full memories and intellectual faculties from her past life. Her primary motivation is survival: to avoid violent death and die of old age, thereby escaping Being X's threat of eternal damnation. Believing a high-ranking military position ensures safety, she enlists in the Empire's Mage Corps at age nine after tests reveal exceptional magical aptitude. She graduates rapidly from military training, becoming a warrant officer and later a second lieutenant. Her combat performance during early missions, such as the Battle of Norden, earns her the Silver Wings Assault Medal and rapid promotions.
Physically, Tanya possesses a petite, childlike frame with fair skin and often wears her blonde hair tied up. Her military uniform is a dark green M1910-style Feldrock with red accents, typically adorned with medals. In combat, she dons a flight suit with a fur-lined collar, goggles, and leg-mounted braces for her computation orb. Her appearance contrasts with her ruthless demeanor; enemies perceive her as a "monster" or "fairy" during aerial engagements.
Tanya's personality is defined by cold rationality, social Darwinism, and Chicago School economics. She views human relationships transactionally, describing soldiers as "human resources" for optimization. She exhibits traits associated with sociopathy: remorselessness, manipulativeness, and a near-total lack of empathy. To advance her career, she cultivates a facade of the "perfect soldier"—disciplined, loyal, and devout—while secretly loathing the Empire's military bureaucracy and Being X. This persona unnerves colleagues like Lieutenant Colonel Erich von Rerugen. Despite her callousness, she avoids unnecessary waste of her subordinates' lives, recognizing high casualty rates damage her reputation.
Her military career sees her rise to major and later lieutenant colonel. After graduating top of her class at the War College, she is granted the aristocratic "von" honorific and command of the 203rd Aerial Mage Battalion. Key campaigns include suppressing the Republic's forces at the Rhine, orchestrating the bombing of Arene by exploiting legal loopholes, and defending the Empire against the Allied Kingdom. Despite seeking rear-echelon assignments, her effectiveness repeatedly places her on the front lines. After the events of the anime film, she is briefly assigned to logistics but is soon forced back into combat as commander of Kampfgruppe Salamander.
Tanya's abilities include high-level magical combat, enhanced physical prowess via magic, and tactical innovation. Her standard equipment is the Type-97 computation orb; she reluctantly uses the experimental Type-95 orb blessed by Being X. Activating the Type-95 requires prayer, temporarily amplifying her power while turning her eyes gold and inducing psychotic rage, often erasing her memory afterward. She excels in aerial dogfighting, long-range sniping, and explosive spellcasting, with over 60 confirmed kills by the Rhine campaign's end. Her strategic acumen is demonstrated in treatises on mobile warfare and psychological operations, such as using her childlike voice for propaganda.
Significant relationships include her eternal antagonism with Being X. She views her adjutant, Viktoriya "Visha" Serebryakov, as a useful tool despite Visha's loyalty. Lieutenant Colonel von Rerugen distrusts her profoundly, while General von Zettour values her strategic insights. Post-film, she gains a persistent enemy in Mary Sue, who seeks vengeance for her father's death.
Tanya's birth date is July 18, though her adoptive birthday is September 24. She dislikes feminine clothing, enjoys chocolate, and excels at card games. Historical parallels link her to figures like Manfred von Richthofen for her aerial combat prowess.
Future developments beyond the film involve her return to frontline command with Kampfgruppe Salamander.
