Description
Genbanojou leads the Natsugawa Genzaemon Troupe, itinerant performers visiting Kikyōgahara village in Shin Province. Though disguised as humans, Genbanojou and his companions—O-Natsu and Shinzaemon—are shapeshifting foxes. Their ruse unravels when Genbanojou’s guise slips upon encountering Hana, a village girl carrying steaming *oyaki* dumplings, his irresistible weakness. Forced to protect their secret, he bargains with Hana: one wish in exchange for her silence.
Hana’s plea—to let her elderly great-grandmother Chiyo witness cherry blossoms—anchors Genbanojou’s actions. Driven solely by the terms of their bargain, he dedicates himself to fulfilling her wish while guarding his supernatural identity. His past remains shrouded, steeped in the troupe’s nomadic traditions, with no clarity on his origins. Through measured interactions with villagers and allies, he balances discretion with cooperation, navigating the fragile line between secrecy and obligation. The story confines his journey to this singular pact, exploring neither his broader history nor future beyond the consequences of his dual existence as a fox among humans.
