OVA
Description
Shinobu Kawanishi is a first-year Ōarai Girls' Academy student from Hitachinaka, Ibaraki Prefecture. She serves as driver for the Duck Team's Type 89B I-Go medium tank. Before joining Sensha-dō, she played as an attacker on the school's volleyball team, which disbanded due to the impending closure. Shinobu participates in tankery aiming to revive her former club. Standing at 170 cm, she is Ōarai's tallest student, possessing a slender build, short brown hair tied in a small ponytail with a red hair tie, and brown eyes. She wears the standard Ōarai Sensha-dō uniform during matches.
Shinobu exhibits exceptional driving skill, consistently maneuvering the underpowered Type 89 beyond its limits. Her techniques include executing off-road zigzag evasion, balancing the tank on its nose during retreats, and manipulating the drivetrain to make it "rear up" for tactical advantages. These abilities stem from her athletic background and reflexes. She physically employs the tank as obstruction in battle, such as disabling a Maus turret by driving onto it or breaking a Pershing tank's barrel through direct contact. During the Anzio High School match, her reconnaissance exposed Anzio's cardboard decoy strategy, and she aggressively pursued and disabled multiple Carro Veloce tankettes. On a mission rescuing Momo Kawashima from Anzio, she disguised herself in an Anzio uniform and later utilized tactical gear including a P90 submachine gun.
Personality-wise, Shinobu maintains a serious, logical demeanor, often serving as the unintentional tsukkomi within her team. She visibly expresses annoyance at teammates' illogical actions, like attempting to "help" tank maneuvers by pushing interior walls. Despite her aloof exterior, she shows warmth and care, particularly outside combat. In the spin-off *Motto Love Love Sakusen Desu*, she develops a friendship with Saki Maruyama during morning runs while wearing a hoodie obscuring her appearance, leading Saki to initially mistake her for a boy. They bond over shared coffee and scenery viewing, continuing their friendship after her identity is revealed to Saki and others.
Additional details include her October 5 birthday coinciding with the 1940 condemnation of the Tripartite Pact, blood type A, preferences for rape blossoms and the M36 tank destroyer, and having an older sister. She occasionally displays awareness of her comparatively modest physique alongside teammates. Her surname combines "river" (河) and "west" (西), sharing its reading with a Japanese aircraft manufacturer known for seaplanes.
