Description
Furlan Church operated as a delinquent in the capital's Underground District before Wall Maria's fall. He possessed light gray eyes and dark blond hair with bangs falling between them, typically dressed in a long-sleeve white shirt, light blue vest, and knee-high boots. Hearing rumors of Levi Ackerman's strength, Furlan tested him by arranging a fight against multiple thugs. Impressed, Furlan left his own gang to join Levi. The duo later rescued Isabel Magnolia from attackers, forming a tight trio that relied on stolen omni-directional mobility gear for underground thefts.

Furlan maintained a calm, level-headed demeanor contrasting Isabel's exuberance, prioritizing seriousness when necessary. Pragmatic, he acknowledged defeat and ceased resistance during his capture by the Scout Regiment. He trusted Levi's leadership implicitly and showed compassion by diverting extra heist funds to an injured comrade, Yan, for medical treatment. This act spurred their pursuit of surface citizenship to secure Yan's ongoing care.

Driven by a long-held desire to escape the Underground, Furlan seized an offer from politician Nicholas Lovof: surface citizenship in exchange for infiltrating the Scout Regiment, stealing incriminating documents from Captain Erwin Smith, and assassinating him. The trio deliberately showcased their ODM gear skills during a theft to attract the Scouts, leading to their capture. Erwin offered them Scout membership to avoid prosecution, which Levi accepted despite initial hesitation.

In the Scouts, Furlan mediated between Levi and squad leader Flagon to prevent clashes during their integration. He attempted to steal Erwin’s documents but aborted when interrupted. Believing Erwin carried them personally, Furlan proposed assassinating him during the 23rd Exterior Scouting Mission. Levi objected to Furlan and Isabel joining the expedition, but they insisted on staying together on the surface.

During the mission, Furlan fought Titans alongside Levi, overcoming initial nerves after witnessing Levi’s resolve. He achieved his first Titan kill with Isabel’s aid. When heavy rain provided cover, Levi left to assassinate Erwin alone, ordering Furlan and Isabel to stay behind. An Abnormal Titan ambushed their squad shortly after. Pinned by his fallen horse, Furlan watched Isabel die distracting the Titan. Freeing himself, he confronted the Titan but suffered critical damage to his ODM gear. The Titan seized and consumed him as Levi returned; Levi recovered his partial remains.

Furlan’s death deeply influenced Levi’s convictions, indirectly compelling him to remain with the Scouts—transforming their mission into a commitment to humanity’s survival. In Erwin Smith’s final vision during the Battle of Shiganshina, Furlan appeared among fallen comrades, symbolically questioning if their sacrifices held meaning.
