Description
Kazuhito Harumi was a human middle school student defined by his intense passion for books, especially those by his favorite author, Shinobu Akiyama. He chose to live alone in Tokyo after his family moved to Okayama, prioritizing proximity to bookstores for instant access to new releases. His life ended abruptly during a cafe robbery when he intervened to protect a female customer from an armed assailant, suffering a fatal gunshot wound to the head. His final, overwhelming regret was never reading the concluding volume, "Lust," of Akiyama's "Deadly Sins" series. This unresolved yearning directly enabled his reincarnation into a long-haired dachshund.

In his canine form, Kazuhito retains complete human consciousness and memories. His appearance features dark grey fur along his back and light brown fur on his underbelly, face, legs, ear tips, and tail. He possesses distinctive circular dark eyes and a movable tuft of fur (ahoge) on his head that shifts visibly with his communication or emotions. Unable to speak, he communicates telepathically, though only specific individuals—primarily Kirihime Natsuno—can perceive his thoughts. His obsession with reading persists, compelling him to read street signs and logos as substitutes until his adoption.

Kirihime Natsuno, the woman he saved in his past life, purchases him from a pet store. She is later revealed to be Shinobu Akiyama, his favorite author. Kazuhito initially fears her due to her sadistic tendencies and habitual use of scissors to intimidate him, often provoked by his teasing remarks about her flat chest. Despite this antagonism, their relationship evolves. Kirihime harbors unreciprocated romantic feelings for him, frequently exhibiting jealousy when other women interact with him. Kazuhito remains largely unaware of her affections, prioritizing access to her writing over personal connections. Nevertheless, he demonstrates concern for her well-being, protecting her from traffic or consoling her during emotional breakdowns stemming from his death.

His key relationships include his younger sister, Madoka Harumi. After his death, she spirals into mental instability, blaming Shinobu Akiyama and wielding a weaponized chainsaw knife to destroy the author's books. Following a confrontation with Kirihime, Madoka regains stability but retains affection for Kazuhito's canine form, calling him "Kazu-nii." Another significant figure is Hami Ōsawa, a shy classmate and aspiring writer whom Kazuhito encouraged before his death. She later recognizes him in his dog form through his mannerisms, despite being unable to hear his thoughts.

Throughout his experiences, Kazuhito exhibits consistent traits: selflessness, shown by sacrificing himself for a stranger; forgiveness, demonstrated by sparing his killer after learning they share a love of books; and unwavering dedication to literature. His development involves adapting to canine limitations, navigating complex social dynamics, and subtly acknowledging deeper bonds with Kirihime, though his primary focus remains on reading her latest manuscripts.
