**Major Henry Varro**, nicknamed "Hero" (from "He" in Henry and "ro" in Varro), was a decorated officer in the United Citizen Federation's Mobile Infantry. He enlisted at 16 using falsified documents, displaying exceptional military aptitude. By 18, he attained lieutenant and was promoted to captain that same year following an unspecified accident. After honorable discharge, he reenlisted at 20 in response to the Manticore Fleet's destruction, eventually commanding the K-12 Roughnecks unit at Fort Casey as one of the Federation’s most decorated officers. Personality evaluations noted expertise in marksmanship, hand-to-hand combat, psychological warfare, and explosives; he remained calm under pressure but exhibited a lax, carefree attitude during rest periods and frequently dismissed superior officers, though peers respected him.
During the Fort Casey mission, Minister Carl Jenkins ordered K-12 to capture a live Arachnid Queen. Varro refused, deeming it a suicide mission that would sacrifice his team. His insubordination led to arrest and transport aboard the FAS *Alesia* for court-martial. When the starship *John A. Warden* went missing, surviving K-12 troopers requested Varro lead the search. General Johnny Rico approved on condition of Varro’s cooperation, which would not influence his trial.
Commanding a joint K-12 and A-01 team aboard the *John A. Warden*, Varro discovered Minister Jenkins and learned the ship had been hijacked by a Queen Bug. Varro revealed to Captain Carmen Ibanez that his arrest stemmed from refusing Jenkins’ order at Fort Casey. After the ship crashed on Earth, Varro led the assault to eliminate the Queen. Confronting Jenkins, who deployed psychically controlled "Federal Intelligence Bugs" (FIBs) as reinforcements, Varro ordered Jenkins to escape and continue research once the FIBs were destroyed. Mortally wounded by warrior bugs, Varro detonated a grenade, killing himself and surrounding arachnids. General Rico later acknowledged his final actions as heroic.
Varro’s leadership during the *John A. Warden* mission resulted in 72 confirmed arachnid kills attributed to him. All K-12 unit members except Sergeant Ratzass perished across these engagements.
