Description
Ohana Matsumae is a 16-year-old high school student abruptly relocated from Tokyo to her grandmother Sui Shijima's hot spring inn, Kissuisō, after her mother Satsuki eloped with a boyfriend to escape debt. This sudden move cut off her daily connection with best friend Kouichi Tanemura, who confessed his feelings just before her departure, leaving their relationship unresolved and emotionally awkward.

Raised primarily by Satsuki, whose negligent parenting forced Ohana into early self-reliance, she became proficient in household chores and cooking out of necessity. This fostered a mindset of relying solely on herself. Working at Kissuisō, however, gradually taught her the necessity of depending on others to navigate life's challenges, marking significant personal growth.

Her personality blends energetic optimism with a strong sense of justice and ideals, frequently leading to clashes with Kissuisō's staff, particularly her stern grandmother and initially hostile coworkers like Minko Tsurugi. Ohana possesses a deep desire to help others, though her unilateral actions often cause unintended consequences or lack appreciation. Over time, her sincerity mends strained relationships. She attends school with coworkers Minko, Nako Oshimizu, and Yuina Wakura, the latter later becoming her apprentice during inn training.

In "Home Sweet Home," Ohana confronts personal stagnation, feeling she has lost her initial drive to "sparkle." While supervising Yuina, she discovers old logbooks maintained by inn maintenance worker Denroku Sukegawa. These detail her mother Satsuki's adolescent rebellion and desire to escape rural life for Tokyo. The logs reveal Satsuki met a photographer who recognized a radiance in her she couldn't see, inspiring her to pursue a career as an editor to support his photography. She left for Tokyo with Sui's reluctant approval. This photographer became Ohana's father, choosing her name for its Hawaiian meaning, "family." The logs also disclose Satsuki briefly returned to Kissuisō with infant Ohana, resolving privately to become a dedicated mother despite her earlier conflicts with Sui.

Reading these entries profoundly impacts Ohana, helping her recognize parallels with her mother's struggles—shared feelings of confinement and a search for purpose. This discovery alleviates her self-imposed pressure to have her future figured out, affirming adulthood involves ongoing, nonlinear growth. Concurrently, Ohana assists Nako during a crisis when Nako's younger sister, Mana, runs away. Witnessing Nako's maternal competence and emotional honesty starkly contrasts with Satsuki's absence during Ohana's childhood, triggering Ohana's emotional breakdown. This experience reinforces her commitment to supporting her friends within her current capabilities.

Physically petite with short, frizzy light-brown hair and bright brown eyes, Ohana has a sensitive nose prone to nosebleeds. Her quirks include easily becoming intoxicated—even from soda, attributed to suggestion—and preferring a 50-50 blend of cola and black tea to mitigate carbonation discomfort. Her blunt honesty sometimes leads to unintended misunderstandings.
