Description
Dr. Zager operates as a key scientist for Team Rocket in the Unova region, distinguished by his white fuzzy hair, mustache, and glasses featuring a single lens like a monocle. He consistently wears a white lab coat over a purple collared shirt, wide-leg khaki pants, and brown loafer-style shoes.
Tasked with analyzing a stolen meteorite fragment from the Nacrene Museum, he employed specialized equipment to confirm its extraterrestrial composition, cementing his position as Team Rocket's lead scientific officer in Unova. He frequently directs agents Jessie, James, and Meowth, supplying them with technology and objectives, such as locating energy-draining Litwick for experimentation.
His personality blends scientific brilliance with a pragmatic, mission-focused approach, demonstrating extensive knowledge of both science and Pokémon while taking evident pride in his work. Despite Team Rocket's hostile aims, he occasionally displays unexpected hospitality, referring to captured individuals like Ash and Ferris as "guests" and explaining the organization's plans to them.
Dr. Zager spearheads several major operations: coordinating the capture of Audino for radar development (thwarted); securing research to revive the fossil Pokémon Archen using Dream Energy from the Dreamyard; disabling Nimbasa City communications and manipulating train controls to facilitate mass Pokémon theft (personally intervening with his helicopter before the mission failed); and successfully capturing the Legendary Weather Trio—Thundurus, Tornadus, and Landorus—using specialized laser cages after their shrines were sabotaged (though attacks damaged his helicopter, forcing their release and his retreat).
He masterminded a plan to access the "Time Gate" space-time anomaly beneath Twist Mountain, requiring a stolen Cover Fossil. Utilizing a restoration machine aboard his helicopter, he revived Tirtouga, intending to use its life force to stabilize the Time Gate and open a portal to capture prehistoric Pokémon. When Tirtouga escaped, evolved into Carracosta, and resisted, he tracked it and ordered Team Rocket to harness its energy. They partially opened the portal before intervention by Ash, Ferris, and wild Carracosta caused mission failure and the Gate's permanent closure.
His final major operation focused on the Mythical Pokémon Meloetta. After Team Rocket located it, Dr. Zager recorded its song, believing it key to unlocking ancient power within underwater ruins. He accompanied forces to the temple, using the song to activate and raise it from the ocean. He observed as Giovanni became overwhelmed by the Reveal Glass, unleashing the incarnate Weather Trio. When the Trio ran out of control and Giovanni faced significant opposition, Dr. Zager retreated alongside him and Team Rocket.
