Kanako Yamazaki is a World War II-era ghost whose ethereal form gradually weakens, compelling her to drain energy from Sayoko Arashiyama to sustain herself and her companion Yayoi Fushimi. She initially believed this theft essential for survival, unaware that bonding with a living human could replenish her strength. Residing in a decaying mansion with Yayoi, her closest ally, Kanako exhibits fierce protectiveness, readily endangering others for Yayoi's safety. Her abrasive, hostile demeanor stems from childhood poverty and labor, fueling resentment toward affluent peers like Kaja Bergmann, Arashi, and Yayoi.

This ingrained bitterness initially drove her antagonism, but her relationship with Yayoi sparked transformation. Kanako gradually shed her harshness, confronting past traumas and forging a sincere bond with Yayoi. A turning point came when she connected with Hideo Murata, a living human; this link eliminated her energy deficit without harming others, stabilizing her existence and deepening her devotion to Yayoi. Though not directly involved in Yayoi's recovery from paralysis—achieved when Yayoi journeyed to the past and overcame psychological barriers—Kanako's steadfast support persisted. Her arc culminates in joining the Ark Café community, working alongside others and embracing coexistence over isolation.
