Ron Portman is a black American former Detroit police officer selected for the Venus Gate cryogenic sleep program to flee the Medusa virus. As the most physically robust survivor, his police training provides vital weapon and combat skills during escape efforts. Initially gripped by fatalism, he voices despair and questions survival, refusing to enter Level 4 due to perceived futility. A leg injury leaves him behind. Separated, he flees in terror after encountering Peter Stevens' mutated Medusa form and later narrowly avoids drowning when Marco Owen drains the facility's main shaft. Reunited with Kasumi Ishiki, Timothy Laisenbach, and Katherine Turner, his fatalism fades, replaced by resolve. He protects Katherine despite her advanced infection and near-petrification, carrying her to safety and shielding her from debris, extending this guardianship to Tim and Kasumi. Captured by Zeus, he undergoes transformation into a beast soldier. Rescued by Marco, the transformation remains incomplete, leaving him human but with altered pink hair. His interactions include pragmatic advice, questioning Kasumi's romantic interest in Marco. Ron survives the manga's events, journeying with the remaining survivors. In the film adaptation, he dies as the group's third casualty.
