Description
Kio Kakazu, a 16-year-old high school student in Okinawa, appears outwardly ordinary with interests in anime, video games, and science fiction. Yet he reveals sophisticated thinking when faced with the extraordinary. His childhood was defined by shyness and difficulty interacting with girls, with Manami Kinjou being his only close female friend during that time; she significantly helped him become more outgoing. Physically, he has brown hair, blue eyes, stands 1.60 meters tall, and wears glasses.
Kio's life transforms after encountering Eris, a cat-like alien from Catia, during a family funeral. He readily accepts her alien nature after witnessing her cat ears, tail, and advanced technology. Finding her sleeping half-naked in his bed the next morning, he provides her shelter. His home soon becomes the official Catian embassy on Earth, granting diplomatic immunity and allowing multiple Catians to reside there for research, making Kio central to human-Catian relations.
Kindhearted with a strong sense of justice, Kio willingly takes risks to protect others. He risks his life to rescue Eris after her capture by government forces, rallying friends and blackmailing adversaries to succeed. Despite a generally passive demeanor, he demonstrates capability with firearms, a skill learned from his uncle Yuichi, though the nature of his uncle's business remains unclear to him. He harbors typical teenage male interests, including a hidden collection of adult magazines under his bed, leading to awkward misunderstandings when discovered—especially by Eris, who sometimes misinterprets human culture based on their content. He also exhibits notable alcohol intolerance, losing consciousness quickly after consuming even small amounts.
Relationships drive Kio's character development. He becomes the central figure in a polyamorous romantic dynamic involving Eris, childhood friend Manami Kinjou, and classmate Aoi Futaba. Eris explicitly selects him as her desired mate during her first heat cycle due to his kindness, though she postpones this after taking heat-suppressing pills for diplomacy. Manami harbors long-standing romantic feelings for Kio, admitting them near the anime's end. Aoi also likes him but struggles to confess due to shyness and insecurity. Kio remains largely oblivious to Manami and Aoi's affections despite numerous hints. Eris proposes a solution based on Catian law permitting multiple mates, leading to all three girls sharing a kiss with Kio in the final episode, an arrangement he accepts without objection.
Kio evolves from an unassuming student to an active participant in interstellar affairs, taking on official roles within the Catian embassy alongside Manami and Aoi. His leadership emerges during crises, such as when Captain Kuune gives him her captain's bell after being incapacitated, placing him in command of the Catian mothership. To override DNA-locked controls and save Catians from Dogisian assailants, he uses the bell to undergo a temporary Catian transformation, gaining cat ears. He assures his surprised friends he likes the ears despite their temporary nature. This transformation, coupled with acquiring a form-fitting power suit, enables feats like tearing apart hostile mechs, shifting him from his earlier non-action role.
His journey culminates piloting the spaceship Cati-Earth One through hyperspace to reach the Catian mother ship. After successfully aiding the Catians, he receives an elevator to space as a gift from Catia, symbolizing his role as a bridge between humanity and alien civilizations. His story concludes embracing this unexpected destiny while maintaining his relationships with Eris, Manami, and Aoi under the polyamorous framework established by Catian norms.
