Description
Maki Itokazu serves as a high school teacher and the faculty advisor for the film club, where she counts the protagonist Kio Kakazu among its members. Her role in the community is dual-layered, as she is also the leader of the Japanese branch of a covert organization known as Beautiful Contact. This group operates under the principle of ensuring that humanity’s first encounter with extraterrestrial life adheres to specific, classic science fiction ideals.

Her personality is rigid and defined by a lifelong immersion in traditional science fiction tropes. Having grown up with strict parents who were both high school teachers, her father, a first-generation science fiction enthusiast, permitted her to consume only sci-fi media alongside her academic studies, exposing her to authors like Arthur C. Clarke and Sakyo Komatsu. This upbringing profoundly shaped her worldview, leading her to expect aliens to possess features such as tentacles, green skin, insectoid bodies, or plasma-based compositions. Consequently, she firmly rejects the legitimacy of Eris, a Catian alien who appears nearly human save for cat ears and a tail, dismissing her as a cosplayer or foreigner despite overwhelming evidence. Maki is known to spend much of her time chaperoning Kio and his science fiction movie club, frequently complaining about the Catians' disappointingly human-like appearance.

Maki’s primary motivation is to preserve a specific, idealized vision of first contact, believing that the real Eris poses a threat to the integrity of science fiction literature itself. Her organization, Beautiful Contact, initially attempts to forcibly expel Eris from Earth to achieve this goal. However, when a third party captures Eris, Maki demonstrates operational pragmatism. Kio blackmails her by threatening to reveal her secret organization's identity, forcing her to assist in the rescue mission. This tactical shift shows that despite her enduring skepticism, she is willing to collaborate to protect her group from exposure.

Her key relationships are primarily with her students and fellow operatives. She is Kio’s teacher and club advisor, keeping a watchful eye over him. She often interacts with Aoi Futaba and Manami Kinjo, who are also part of the factions pursuing Eris. Later in the story, when Kio and his companions travel to space to save the Catian mothership, Maki remains behind. She performs a notable action by disguising herself as Eris, albeit poorly, to create a diversion and make hostile forces believe that Kio and Eris are still present at the Catian Embassy.

Her character development is minimal, as her fundamental disbelief in Eris’s authenticity remains stubbornly unshaken throughout the series, even after official public contact between Earth and Catia is established. She continues to lament what she perceives as the damage the real Catians are doing to the genre of science fiction. Regarding notable abilities, the existing information focuses on her role as an organizer and strategist for Beautiful Contact, coordinating operations via encrypted methods, rather than any specific combat or technical skills.
