Description
Rimuru Tempest began existence as Satoru Mikami, a 37-year-old Japanese salaryman fatally stabbed while protecting a colleague. Reincarnated as a slime in a fantasy world, this rebirth bestowed unique abilities via the Voice of the World, including the power to absorb and replicate skills from consumed entities. Awakening in a cave, Rimuru bonded with the sealed Storm Dragon Veldora. Their exchange of names granted Rimuru the surname "Tempest," forging a familial link that amplified Rimuru's magical potential and initiated their shared journey.
Initially manifesting as a blue, translucent spherical slime roughly 40 cm in diameter, Rimuru's slime form expanded to 70-80 cm after evolving into a Demon Slime and further to 80-100 cm as an Ultimate Slime. Metallic or golden hues occasionally surfaced during specific skill activations or evolutions. By consuming the deceased otherworlder Shizu, Rimuru gained a human form presenting an androgynous teenage appearance with silver-blue hair and golden eyes. This form's height increased alongside major power milestones: starting at 120 cm, reaching 125-130 cm as a Demon Lord Seed, 135-140 cm as a True Demon Lord, and stabilizing at 155 cm as an Ultimate Slime. Rimuru's attire evolved from simple pelts to elaborate regal garments, often featuring draconic motifs or Shizu's iconic mask.
Series creator Fuse confirms Rimuru is canonically genderless. While initially self-identifying with male pronouns due to Satoru's memories, Rimuru's usage shifted toward neutrality over time. The character possesses no biological sex characteristics and embodies "true genderlessness." Some localized translations introduced inconsistent pronoun use, but the original material employs only neutral terms or Rimuru's name. Subordinates within the narrative occasionally perceive the human form as feminine, designing traditionally feminine clothing without objection, reflecting cultural interpretation rather than gender identity.
Rimuru's personality merges Satoru's human experiences with monster pragmatism. A cheerful, cooperative exterior and tendency to avoid conflict or acquiesce to requests—traits rooted in Satoru's work habits—mask a calculative, strategic mind adept at negotiation, information control, and long-term planning. Protective instincts turn ruthlessly violent when subordinates or allies are threatened, resulting in actions like mass slaughter or psychological torture. Leadership balances a desire for communal comfort with political cunning, including manipulating historical records to preserve a benevolent image. The massacre of Tempest citizens caused significant trauma, triggering a detached, unsympathetic demeanor during crises.
Core abilities originated from Satoru's dying words interpreted as skills by the Voice of the World. **Predator** enabled absorption and mimicry, evolving into **Gluttony** after consuming the Orc Lord's **Starved** skill, and later into the Ultimate Skill **Beelzebuth**, allowing soul and energy consumption. **Great Sage** provided analysis and skill management, evolving into **Raphael** for enhanced computation before separating into the independent personality **Ciel**, which generates new skills. Other significant abilities include **Degenerate** (skill fusion, sacrificed for Raphael), **Magic Sense** for perception, and **Thought Acceleration** for altered time perception. Demon Lord transformation increased magicules tenfold and granted immortality. Key combat techniques encompass **Megiddo** (solar energy manipulation), **Black Flame**, and spatial manipulation via later skills.
Rimuru founded the Jura Tempest Federation by uniting goblins, direwolves, ogres (renamed Kijin), and other monsters. Leadership expanded through establishing infrastructure, trade, and diplomacy with human nations and dwarves. The massacre of citizens by Falmuth forces prompted Rimuru's evolution into a True Demon Lord, necessitating the sacrifice of 10,000 human souls to resurrect slain subordinates. This event marked a shift toward more assertive governance and engagement in demon lord politics. Later developments included forming alliances with entities like Milim Nava and joining the Octagram demon lords. Spin-off media depicts Rimuru's daily life in Tempest, such as teaching Shizu's students and participating in cultural activities, demonstrating adaptability across diplomatic, educational, and casual contexts.
