Description
Nana Astar Deviluke is the second princess of the Deviluke royal family, the younger sister of Lala Satalin Deviluke and the older twin of Momo Belia Deviluke. She first appears in the original To Love Ru manga and becomes a more prominent figure in the sequel series To Love Ru Darkness, where she settles on Earth as a student at Sainan High School. Nana has a petite build, stands at 151 centimeters, and possesses pink hair that she usually wears in pigtails, purple eyes, a long black tail ending in a heart-shaped tip, and a notable sharp tusk on the left side of her upper teeth. Her preferred clothing style is Gothic Lolita fashion, often incorporating black and red colors. Her defining ability is telepathic communication with animals, which allows her to understand and command various creatures. She also carries a device called a D-Dial, an invention of Lala that stores her animal friends in a virtual space and summons them when needed. This power complements her twin sister Momo's ability to control plants. Nana’s personality is straightforward, impatient, and quick to anger, traits that mirror her father King Gid Lucion Deviluke. She is often described as tomboyish and stands in contrast to Momo’s more gentle and calculated demeanor. Despite her hot-tempered exterior, she is deeply loyal to her family. Her initial hostility toward the protagonist Rito Yuki stems from her perception of him as perverted and a distraction to Lala. Over time, however, she unconsciously develops affectionate feelings for him, though she consciously resists these emotions and frequently calls him a beast. This internal conflict makes her a tsundere figure within the series. In To Love Ru Darkness, Nana’s role expands significantly. She and Momo use space-distortion technology to create a living space in the attic of the Yuuki household, and Nana enrolls at Sainan High School. There, she forms a close friendship with Mea Kurosaki, which becomes a central plotline. When Mea reveals her true identity as an alien assassin and living weapon, Nana is initially heartbroken and traumatized, feeling that their bond was never real. Encouraged by Rito, Nana confronts Mea and insists that the feelings between them matter more than origins or purposes, ultimately reconciling and rekindling their friendship. This arc demonstrates Nana’s growth in emotional depth and her capacity for empathy. Her romantic feelings for Rito also intensify after this experience, leading to moments of vulnerability such as attempting to sleep beside him, though she misinterprets Momo already being there and reacts with her characteristic fury. Nana supports Lala’s relationship with Rito, though her frequent outbursts often serve as comedic relief. She acts as a grounded presence among the otherwise romantically infatuated female cast, providing conflict and humor through her quick temper and blunt honesty. Her journey from a mischievous princess who fled her studies to a student navigating friendship and budding romance is central to her character development in the Darkness series.
