Description
Meme Oshino is a middle-aged nomadic specialist in supernatural phenomena, resolving cases involving oddities while maintaining balance between humans and aberrations. He holds a college degree in Shinto studies but never became a priest, retaining the capability to perform rituals and exorcisms. During university, he belonged to the Occult Research Club alongside Yozuru Kagenui, Deishuu Kaiki, Tadatsuru Teori, and Izuko Gaen. This group collaborated to create Yotsugi Ononoki, a tsukumogami born from a corpse used for a century, an act that cursed each member. Post-graduation, Oshino adopted a nomadic lifestyle, operating as an independent oddity expert and occasionally working within Gaen's network. He has no known family, though the specifics remain unclear.

Oshino possesses a lanky physique with short, unruly blonde hair, yellow eyes, sideburns, and a goatee. He slicks his hair back for Shinto rituals. His signature attire includes an unbuttoned pink Hawaiian shirt, dark cargo shorts, and black geta-style sandals. Accessories feature an inverted cross earring on his right ear and a matching necklace. He often holds an unlit cigarette, stating he avoids troubling others with smoke, though the manga adaptation occasionally depicts him smoking. His overall appearance projects eccentricity.

His personality is laid-back, enigmatic, and composed, rarely showing strong emotions. He speaks casually regardless of the situation and adopts an all-knowing demeanor, though former colleagues describe him as good-natured and fond of showing off to children. Oshino prioritizes balance over allegiance to humans or aberrations, preferring negotiation and minimal intervention. He adheres to a core philosophy: "People can only save themselves. One person saving another is impossible." He rejects victimhood narratives, asserting that oddities exploit pre-existing emotional instabilities in their hosts. Oshino dislikes modern technology, avoids phone conversations, and harbors a distaste for farewells, often departing locations subtly without formal goodbyes.

Oshino's involvement begins in Kizumonogatari, where he retrieves the heart of Kiss-Shot Acerola-Orion Heart-Under-Blade without her knowledge. He saves Koyomi Araragi from vampire hunters, brokers one-on-one duels for Kiss-Shot's stolen limbs, and intervenes to prevent Araragi from losing his humanity during a fight. After Guillotine Cutter kidnaps Tsubasa Hanekawa—an unforeseen event prompting genuine remorse—Oshino provides Araragi with Kiss-Shot's heart free of charge, abandoning a prior financial agreement. He later brokers a compromise where Araragi severely weakens Kiss-Shot, reverting her to a childlike form while minimizing his vampiric traits.

In Bakemonogatari's Hitagi Crab arc, Oshino aids Hitagi Senjougahara, afflicted by a weight-stealing crab oddity linked to repressed trauma involving her mother's cult. He conducts a Shinto ritual to communicate with the crab deity but subdues it physically when the ritual falters. Senjougahara ultimately resolves her burden through personal confrontation, aligning with Oshino's belief in self-salvation. During the Mayoi Snail arc, he identifies Mayoi Hachikuji as a lost cow manifestation and devises a route to guide her to her mother's former home. For Suruga Kanbaru's Rainy Devil arm in Suruga Monkey, Oshino prepares Araragi to confront the entity by having Shinobu share her blood, enabling him to survive Kanbaru's death wish and nullify the contract.

He subtly foreshadows his departure during the Nadeko Snake and Tsubasa Cat arcs, warning Araragi not to over-rely on him. He leaves town without announcement, relocating to Antarctica. Years later, during Owarimonogatari's Ougi Dark arc, Tsubasa Hanekawa retrieves him. He witnesses Araragi confronting Ougi Oshino—a manifestation of his own psyche—and dispels the encroaching Darkness by acknowledging Ougi as his niece, solidifying her existence and restoring balance.

Recurring mannerisms include greeting others with "You look so lively. Did something good happen?" and reiterating his non-interventionist creed: "I'm not going to save you, just lending a hand. Only you can save yourself." His surname means "hidden plains," and his given name, typically feminine, contrasts his appearance.
