Description
Yuri Shibuya, born in Boston but raised in Saitama, Japan, carried a name written with the kanji for "advantage." This led to childhood taunts of "Shibuya Yūri, Harajuku Fūri." His mother attributed his July birth to the name, though Conrad Weller later confessed he inspired it by mentioning "Yūri" meant July in his world during her labor.

Before his journey to another world, Yuri was a typical 15-year-old Japanese high school student. He loved baseball but possessed only average athletic skill and held strong moral convictions, quitting his middle school team after striking a supervisor who bullied a teammate. His life shifted dramatically when bullies dunked his head in a toilet, triggering a portal that transported him to the Great Demon Kingdom (Shin Makoku). There, his "soukoku" (double black) hair and eyes identified him as the 27th Maou (Demon King).

Pacifistic and idealistic, Yuri rejects war, favoring dialogue, mutual understanding, and trust to resolve disputes. He readily intervenes personally to protect others, even at significant personal risk. However, he battles intense emotional volatility. When enraged or deeply distressed, he enters "Maou mode," adopting speech patterns reminiscent of Japanese historical dramas and unleashing immense magical power. Initially causing memory loss and exhaustion, he gradually learned control over this ability.

His magic stems from a water contract, enabling him to summon creatures like water dragons or craft makeshift forms from mud and debris. Uniquely, he wields magic in human territories with low maryoku particles and houseki-rich areas debilitating to full-blooded demons. He carries the soul of Susanna Julia von Wincott, a blind healer who perished in a human-demon war twenty years prior. This connection allows him to "read" raised letters by touch but occasionally causes temporary blindness when Julia's consciousness surfaces. His blood serves as the key to the forbidden box "Mirror's Depth."

Key relationships shape his path. He accidentally became engaged to Wolfram von Bielefeld by slapping Wolfram’s left cheek (a noble marriage proposal custom) and unknowingly accepting a duel challenge by retrieving a thrown knife. Conrad Weller, his half-human bodyguard who named him at birth, guided his integration into Shin Makoku. Bonding over shared interests like baseball, Conrad entrusted him with Julia’s pendant. Yuri also adopted a human child, Greta, demonstrating his commitment to bridging human-demon divides.

Throughout his reign, Yuri matured from a reluctant ruler into a proactive leader. Early magical outbursts left him unconscious, but he later harnessed his power to seal forbidden boxes and confront threats like Soushu, ultimately earning recognition as Shin Makoku’s "greatest Maou." His core mission remained fostering peace between humans and demons through trust and redemption.

Trivia notes include his dislike of dolphins ("I never know what they’re thinking"), a history of failed romantic pursuits, and quirks like considering "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" a love song. He lost his cell phone during his first interworld transit and uses "Harajuku Fūri" as an alias outside the castle.
