Description
Evangeline Athanasia Katherine McDowell, commonly called Evangeline A.K. McDowell, is a centuries-old vampire whose physical form remains that of a ten-year-old girl due to a transformation in her childhood. Born in Europe, likely Scotland or Ireland, during the Hundred Years' War, she was originally human. On her tenth birthday, she was transformed into a Shinso vampire through sorcery, an act later revealed as the work of the Mage of the Beginning as part of immortality experiments. After unintentionally feeding on someone in her castle, she fled into the wild. She initially suffered from standard vampire weaknesses like sunlight vulnerability but overcame them through magical training, eventually becoming a High Daylight Walker. She honed her magic to exact revenge on her creator, whom she killed. Her inability to age forced a nomadic life until she learned to disguise herself as an adult with magic.

She later encountered the powerful mage Nagi Springfield, the Thousand Master, who saved her. Developing strong feelings for him, she pursued him relentlessly until he evaded her. Tracking him to Japan, she was tricked into consuming an anti-vampire soup containing garlic and leeks, enabling Nagi to capture her. He placed her under the Infernus Scholasticus curse, confining her to Mahora Academy and restricting her magic. Nagi promised freedom upon her graduation but disappeared five years later, leaving her bound until the arrival of his son, Negi Springfield. During her confinement, the school dean, Konoemon Konoe, employed her as a security guard.

At Mahora Academy, Evangeline is officially the 26th student in Class 2/3-A in Japanese alphabetical order. She maintains a cynical and aloof demeanor, rarely engaging with classmates and often making sinister remarks. She participates in the Go Club and Tea Ceremony Club out of personal interest. Despite her villainous reputation, evidenced by aliases like Dark Evangel and a historical bounty, she possesses a rarely shown softer side. She is frequently accompanied by her partners, the robotic Chachamaru and the doll Chachazero. She reacts strongly to comments about her height or youthful appearance.

Initially an antagonist, she attacks Negi Springfield upon his arrival, claiming that draining his blood would break her curse. The truth of this claim remains unclear. After witnessing Negi’s potential and his actions during a field trip in Kyoto, where she temporarily left campus to defeat the antagonist Fate Averruncus and a demon god, her role shifts. She agrees to become Negi’s magic combat instructor, employing a harsh, taskmaster approach. Her training includes demanding menial servitude and daily blood payments. This mentorship becomes central to her development, with motivations sometimes ambiguous, possibly testing Negi’s capabilities or repaying a debt for Chachamaru’s creation.

She continues to develop by training other students, such as Asuna Kagurazaka, whom she put through a rigorous boot camp and forcibly took on as an apprentice. She orchestrates tests for Negi’s group, like a badge collection game to determine who would accompany him to Wales, showing her continued involvement in his development despite her often detached attitude.

In later narrative events, including the sequel UQ Holder!, Evangeline’s story continues centuries forward. Freed from her curse after Nagi Springfield is saved from the Mage of the Beginning’s influence, she regains full powers and adopts the name Yukihime. She establishes and leads UQ Holder, a family of immortals. She saves and turns Touta Konoe, Negi’s grandson, into a vampire after his parents’ death, raising him for two years and developing a close, familial bond. It is later revealed that she met Touta in the distant past through time distortions, where he was her first friend and love interest under the alias Kitty. Her romantic history includes once loving Nagi Springfield and even marrying him in an alternate timeline; she has also expressed romantic feelings for Negi Springfield and holds deep affection for Touta, though she rejects his initial marriage proposal.

As a Shinso vampire, Evangeline possesses a Class A immortality type, granting eternal youth, immense regenerative abilities, and enhanced physical attributes like strength, speed, and senses. She is immune to traditional vampire weaknesses except for a distaste for garlic due to her enhanced smell. She is a master mage specializing in ice and dark magic, with capabilities including high-level barrier spells, ice attacks like Nivis Casus and Iaculatio Grandinis, and powerful techniques such as Anthos Pagetou Khilion Eton and Eternal Freeze. She created Magia Erebea, a dark magic that fuses spells with the user’s soul, and she can use it without standard corruptive drawbacks. Her additional skills include puppetry, controlling people like dolls with threads or vampiric influence, and mastery of aikido, allegedly learned from its creator, Morihei Ueshiba.

Her relationships are a key aspect of her character. With Negi Springfield, she evolves from a grudging antagonist to a respected teacher and guide, with some narrative hints at a potential romantic interest. Her relationship with Nagi Springfield is defined by her love for him, his rejection, and her eventual forgiveness after he lifts her curse. With Touta Konoe, her bond is deeply personal and familial, rooted in their shared history across time and her role as his caretaker.
