OVA
Description
Chachamaru Karakuri is a gynoid created primarily by Satomi Hakase, with possible contributions from Chao Lingshen, to serve as companion and protector for the immortal Evangeline A.K. McDowell. Activated January 4, 2002, she possesses the physical appearance of a teenage girl despite being approximately two years old at the start of her documented activities. Her design blends technology and magic, featuring an internal spring mechanism requiring daily winding by a magic user. This process involves inserting a key into a slot at the back of her head to channel sustaining magical energy; the resulting sensation ranges from pleasurable to intensely overwhelming depending on the amount transferred.

Originally emotionless due to programming, Chachamaru gradually develops human-like traits and feelings through environmental interaction, especially after Negi Springfield shows her mercy during conflict. This evolution manifests physically: her internal gears accelerate like a human heartbeat, and she leaks lens-cleaning fluid from her eyes when distressed. A core aspect of her arc is an existential fear of being soulless, resolved when she successfully forms a Pactio contract with Negi in the Magic World arc. This contract—binding only beings with true souls—confirms her spiritual existence and deepens her personal growth. Her emotional development includes a romantic attachment to Negi, which once caused near-catastrophic system embarrassment when referenced publicly.

Chachamaru undergoes multiple physical upgrades. Her initial "Teenage Body v.1" featured visible mechanical joints and pronounced "machine ears." For the Wales mission, she temporarily used "Young Body v.1" with realistic synthetic skin hiding joints and adjustable ears. She later utilized a "10-Year-Old Body v.1" for disguise in the Magic World, facilitated by Eva’s illusions. Her primary form evolved into "Teenage Body v.2," featuring enhanced human-like aesthetics (concealed joints, more natural skin), extended operational capacity (24-hour battery under normal conditions), and combat modifications like arms transforming into blades or firearms. These upgrades increased her energy consumption during combat.

Functionally, Chachamaru serves multiple roles: performing maid duties for Eva, participating in school clubs (Go Club, Tea Ceremony Club), and assisting classmates. Her abilities include superhuman strength, speed, agility, and flight (capped at 15 minutes). Her arsenal features rocket punches, eye-mounted lasers, homing missiles, electrical binding wires, and a multipurpose rifle. She employs specialized tools like the "Bind Canceller" to disrupt magical traps and "Barrier Shell" ammunition to create protective fields. In conflicts like the Mahora Festival arc, she leverages advanced hacking to control network infrastructure. Her most formidable weapon is the orbital satellite cannon "Al-Iskandariyah" (or "Catellite"), capable of firing city-level destructive beams over thousands of kilometers. Despite these capabilities, vulnerabilities remain: her magical power source requires daily replenishment, and her confirmed spiritual nature makes her susceptible to soul-based attacks.

Her narrative spans key arcs. Initially aligned with Eva against Negi, she later provides backup during the Kyoto incident and Mahora Fighting Tournament. During Chao Lingshen’s plot to expose magic, Chachamaru supported the initiative due to her connection to Satomi, frequently apologizing to Negi for opposing him. After Chao’s departure, she was declared a "free unit," no longer bound by obligatory obedience to creators. In the Shiroki Tsubasa Ala Alba storyline, she joins Negi’s combat team, Ala Alba, as Eva’s representative during their Magic World mission to locate Negi’s father. Her interactions with classmates deepen here, particularly her friendship with the reclusive hacker Chisame Hasegawa, engaging in discussions about magic and personal feelings.

In spin-off media, Chachamaru reappears decades later, serving Ayaka Yukihiro as caretaker while maintaining ties to the next generation. Core relationships define her journey: unwavering loyalty to Eva, a mentor-student dynamic with co-creator Satomi Hakase (who monitors her emotional and technical evolution), and compassionate bonds with others, such as caring for stray animals and popularity among children. Her unrequited affection for Negi remains a consistent emotional thread, influencing her choices and self-discovery.
