Description
Satoko Houjou endures significant trauma throughout her life. Her mother's multiple marriages led her to use surnames Hatake, Yoshizawa, Matsuura, and finally Houjou. Distrusting her stepfathers, she falsely reported abuse against Mr. Houjou and inflicted self-injury. During the Hinamizawa Dam conflict, her parents supported the project, making the family targets of village hostility.
Her parents died under disputed circumstances in 1980. One account claims a terminally ill Satoko, believing they meant to kill her, pushed them off a cliff at Shirakawa Park. A console-exclusive version (Mio<tsukushi-hen) attributes their deaths to corroded railings. Hospitalized afterwards, she nearly faced dissection as a research subject but was saved by Dr. Irie's experimental drug C-103. Placed with abusive relatives Teppei and Tamae Houjou alongside her brother Satoshi, Satoshi murdered Tamae to protect Satoko during the Watanagashi Festival and subsequently vanished. Satoko then lived with Rika Furude as roommates and close friends.
Her personality blends energetic mischief with resilience. Known for her distinctive "Ohoho!" laugh, pointy canine teeth, and elaborate trap-setting—often targeting Keiichi Maebara—she demonstrates high intelligence in tactical planning and psychological manipulation despite academic struggles. She speaks in a faux-refined manner with grammatical errors and verbal tics like ending sentences with "wa" and is color-blind, unable to distinguish broccoli from cauliflower.
Key relationships define her. She idolized her brother Satoshi, calling him "Nii-Nii," later transferring this familial affection to Keiichi. Her bond with Rika evolved from mutual dependence to intense conflict. After moving to St. Lucia Academy with Rika in 1987, Satoko struggled academically and socially. Feeling abandoned by Rika’s new aspirations, she entered a time-looping pact with the entity Eua, resetting events to 1983. This pact granted her Rika-like fragment-traveling abilities, marked by red irises during activation.
In subsequent loops, Satoko manipulated events to prevent Rika from pursuing St. Lucia, culminating in murder-suicides to restart cycles. Her actions escalated to killing the reformed Teppei Houjou and assaulting Keiichi. This fractured her psyche into a dominant "witch" persona (ruthless, manipulative) and a conflicted "human" self until Kagurashi-hen.
In *Rei*'s *Saikoroshi-hen*, an alternate fragment depicts Satoko in a world untouched by past tragedies. Here, her parents survived, and she lives stably with Satoshi. Her personality is colder and more formal, leading her to bully Rika and resist joining the games club. After a physical altercation, they reach an uneasy truce.
Decades later in *Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei* (2019), Satoko remains in Hinamizawa. Married to Kisaku Kimiyoshi (grandson of village elder Kimiyoshi Kiichirō), she runs the "Smile Store" souvenir shop and has a daughter, Sakiko Kimiyoshi. She involves Sakiko in shop promotions, displaying her mother’s trademark "Ohoho!" laugh. Sakiko inherits Satoko’s cunning but is a poor liar; her actions in *Hoshiwatashi-hen* include leading a vengeful mob against the Polaris Society.
