Description
Kaoru Akashi is one of the main characters of the series and a member of the powerful esper trio known as The Children. She is the younger sister of Yoshimi Akashi and the daughter of Akie Akashi. Her abilities manifested at a very young age, around three years old, when she awoke as a Level 7 psychokinetic esper. An incident where she accidentally hurt her mother led to her being sent to B.A.B.E.L., the government organization that handles espers, to learn to control her power. For a period, she was kept in isolation until her powers stabilized enough to be placed with other children her age, specifically Aoi Nogami and Shiho Sannomiya, who would become her closest friends and teammates.

Kaoru has an energetic and often impulsive personality. She becomes excited when given a mission and is quick to act, though this haste means she frequently gets carried away and overlooks the surrounding situation. She has a short temper and is known to lash out, even at people she cares about, such as her supervisor Koichi Minamoto. Her typical method of expressing frustration is to hurl him against a nearby wall. Despite her hot-headedness, she is deeply kind and values the people in her life regardless of whether they are espers or normal humans. She forms strong connections with others and is driven by a desire to protect them, pushing the boundaries of her abilities to do so.

A significant part of Kaoru’s character is her struggle with the fear of her own immense power. Due to her childhood experiences, she often views herself and her abilities as monstrous, and she carries a fear of abandonment, believing that people leave because they are afraid of what she can do. She is also known for a recurring comedic trait of acting like a lecherous old man, often sexually harassing her female teammates and classmates, though she becomes more embarrassed about this behavior as she grows older. She is shown to be less intellectually inclined than Aoi or Shiho, preferring to follow her heart rather than use cunning strategies, and she enjoys hobbies such as reading magazines and consuming energy drinks.

A dark prediction hangs over Kaoru’s future. A Level 7 precognitive foresaw a devastating war between espers and normal humans, with an adult Kaoru becoming the leader of the esper organization P.A.N.D.R.A. In this prophesied future, known as the Queen of Catastrophe, she would commit terrible atrocities before ultimately being killed by her former protector, Koichi Minamoto. A significant portion of the story involves Minamoto and her friends working to prevent this grim destiny, while the esper criminal Hyoubu Kyousuke and his group P.A.N.D.R.A. anticipate this future and regard Kaoru as their future queen.

Kaoru’s most important relationship is with Koichi Minamoto, the young prodigy assigned by B.A.B.E.L. to supervise The Children. After being mistreated by previous supervisors who feared them, The Children initially distrusted Minamoto, believing he would also give up on them. However, during an incident where her powers went out of control, he told her that while her powers were a problem, she herself could stay, an act of acceptance that allowed them to form a deep, trusting bond. She also has a significant relationship with Hyoubu Kyousuke, the leader of P.A.N.D.R.A., who acts as a rival and future antagonist who believes in her destined role as the Queen. Her relationship with her immediate family is strained, as they are afraid of her abilities, leading to neglect that contributed to her feelings of isolation.

Throughout the series, Kaoru undergoes substantial character development. She transitions from a volatile and distrustful child who believed the only way to protect her friends was through intimidation and force. Through the support of Minamoto and her teammates, she begins to heal from the damage caused by her traumatic childhood. She faces her fear of her own powers directly, eventually coming to accept them as a part of herself. She determines that she will become strong enough to save everyone and change the predicted future, showing a shift from reacting out of fear to acting with confidence and a focus on what can be achieved.

As a Level 7 psychokinetic, Kaoru possesses the ability to move objects with her mind, which is considered one of the most powerful abilities in the series. Her powers are so vast that they exceed the measurable scale of Level 6, making her potential nearly limitless. She uses psychokinesis for a variety of effects, including flight, creating protective barriers, enhancing her physical strikes with attacks like the Psychic Megaton Punch, and projecting energy blades such as the Psychic Large Cleavage. Her powers are typically restricted by a limiter to prevent them from going out of control. Later in the series, her limiter is modified to allow for a Triple Boost, which lets her sync with Aoi and Shiho to combine their powers. She also develops a unique ability called the Force of Absolution, which she created through sheer will to counteract powerful mind control. As a high-level esper, she naturally possesses strong resistance to telepathy and mind control from weaker psychics. A unique trait she exhibits is a Queen Sense, an underdeveloped ability to sense when other espers, particularly those she cares about, are in danger or distress.
