Description
Guildmaster Wigglytuff leads Wigglytuff's Guild, training exploration teams. His journey began as a prodigious young Igglybuff, recognized for exceptional exploratory talent. He befriended an Armaldo in Murky Forest, defying local superstitions about a resident "monster." This friendship led to their first joint exploration of Eastern Cave, where they discovered a Defend Globe. Igglybuff steadfastly considered Armaldo his mentor, calling him "master" despite objections. Their explorations ended with Armaldo's arrest as a B-Rank Outlaw by Officer Magnezone; as a parting gift, Armaldo gave Igglybuff the Defend Globe, a treasure Wigglytuff still holds dear.
Evolving into Wigglytuff brought renown as a promising explorer. During a Southern Jungle expedition, his stolen food caused him to collapse from hunger. Revived by Team Charm using a Perfect Apple, he temporarily joined their master-rank rescue team. He helped them navigate Ditto's illusions to protect a Time Gear in Boulder Quarry, motivated by further Perfect Apple rewards, beginning his lasting obsession with them.
He later settled in Treasure Town, founding Wigglytuff's Guild with Chatot as second-in-command. The guild operates under specific policies: morning cheers ("ONE! DON'T SHIRK WORK! TWO! RUN AWAY AND PAY! THREE! SMILES GO FOR MILES!") and ten exploration rules emphasizing teamwork, preparation, and revenue sharing. As guildmaster, Wigglytuff oversees expeditions like the journey to Fogbound Lake and personally welcomes new teams, including the player and partner. His leadership drives critical decisions, like prioritizing the search for the Hidden Land upon learning of Temporal Tower's collapse.
Despite an easygoing, naive demeanor—often sleeping during briefings and addressing everyone as "friends"—he possesses hidden intensity. He exhibits explosive emotional reactions, particularly about Perfect Apples; guild members fear his tantrums when supplies run out. His formidable strength emerges when challenged, such as single-handedly defeating Team Skull after their failed "Noxious Gas Combo" attempt to incapacitate him, or protecting Chatot during a Brine Cave ambush by Kabutops and Omastar.
Wigglytuff's relationship with Chatot blends mutual respect and camaraderie. Chatot frequently manages day-to-day operations and acts during Wigglytuff's absences, though Wigglytuff occasionally finds him overly rigid. Their bond is underscored by shared history, including explorations where Chatot shielded him from attacks.
In later appearances like Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon, Wigglytuff appears as a connectable character after rescue missions. Pronouns used differ between Explorers of Time/Darkness/Sky (he/him) and Super Mystery Dungeon (she/her).
His personality combines childlike enthusiasm with strategic insight. He solves complex mysteries, deciphering layered treasure maps by burning them and recognizing the Relic Fragment pattern's significance for accessing the Hidden Land. He values friendship deeply, comforting Bidoof during crises and honoring promises to legendaries like Uxie until circumstances force disclosure.
