Naruko Anjo, known as Anaru, forms a core part of the childhood friend group, the Super Peace Busters. As a child, she sported chin-length brown hair and dark grey-rimmed glasses, typically wearing casual outfits: a purple shirt featuring a yellow shooting star, a white skirt, and blue running shoes.
Her personality reflects a conflict between outward actions and inner feelings. She often displays a cold or dismissive attitude towards Jinta Yadomi, especially around her high school friends, yet privately maintains deep concern for his well-being and a longstanding romantic affection. Easily influenced by peers, she frequently conforms to social pressures despite internal disagreement, a trait persisting from childhood into adolescence. Despite this, she actively supports Jinta during his social withdrawal, bringing homework and expressing frustration with his reclusive lifestyle while still hoping for their relationship.
Naruko admired Meiko "Menma" Honma but simultaneously envied Menma's closeness to Jinta. She carries guilt over inadvertently contributing to Menma’s fatal accident by asking a question that precipitated the tragedy. After Menma’s death, she wrestled with jealousy towards Jinta’s ongoing fixation on Menma’s memory, complicating her efforts to reconnect with him.
Her part-time job at a video game store and personal manga and video game collection facilitate reconnection with Jinta and Tetsudo "Poppo" Hisakawa, serving as a bridge to mend their fractured friendships. In the anime film sequel *Menma e no Tegami*, set one year after the main events, she struggles to articulate her unresolved feelings for Jinta while drafting a letter to Menma. This process culminates in emotional clarity, subtly marked by a change in her hairstyle.
During the 10th-anniversary event, set a decade later, Naruko’s romantic arc resolves. After overhearing Jinta casually mention his intention to propose marriage, she reacts with flustered excitement, confirming her continued affection and acceptance of his proposal, signaling their transition into a committed relationship.
