Description
Motoyasu Kitamura is a 21-year-old university student from Japan who is summoned to the kingdom of Melromarc as the Spear Hero, one of the four Legendary Heroes tasked with defending the world from the Waves of Calamity. He is a young man with blonde hair and orange eyes, known for his flashy appearance and optimistic, light-hearted demeanor. Initially, Motoyasu is the most outwardly friendly and sociable among the four heroes, but he is also incredibly naive and gullible. He has a distorted view of women, believing them to be pure and incapable of wrongdoing, which makes him easily manipulated. This flaw is exploited by Princess Malty S Melromarc, who falsely accuses the Shield Hero, Naofumi Iwatani, of rape. Motoyasu accepts her story without question and becomes openly hostile toward Naofumi, repeatedly challenging him and refusing to consider evidence that contradicts Malty's claims.
Motoyasu's motivations are driven by a desire to play the hero in a world he believes functions like an online game he once played. He enjoys the company of women and initially surrounds himself with a harem of female companions. However, his arrogance and refusal to admit mistakes cause significant problems during the early waves. He unwisely unseals a seed that grows uncontrollably, spawning plant demons, and his rigid adherence to game-like logic leads to disastrous real-world consequences.
A turning point occurs when Malty eventually betrays Motoyasu in the same way she betrayed Naofumi, stealing from him and abandoning him. This betrayal triggers a complete mental breakdown, and Motoyasu falls into a deep depression. During this time, he unlocks the Curse Series of the Legendary Spear, which fundamentally alters his personality. He develops an obsessive, romantic fixation on Filo, Naofumi's Filolial familiar, and begins to regard Naofumi as his "father-in-law." Simultaneously, he grows to despise all other women, referring to them as "pigs" and finding their presence repulsive. He becomes fearless and bloodthirsty in combat, showing no concern for killing or getting covered in blood. By following Naofumi's advice on power-up methods, Motoyasu becomes the most powerful of the four original Legendary Heroes by the end of volume 11.
In terms of abilities, Motoyasu is highly skilled in spear combat, specializing in wide-area attacks that deal significant damage to groups of enemies. He is also proficient in fire magic and healing magic. His Legendary Spear can unlock a Curse Series that grants immense power at the cost of mental stability. He later learns to summon and command Filolials, large bird-like creatures, and develops a particular bond with Filo.
Key relationships define his role in the story. His relationship with Naofumi transforms from bitter antagonism to unwavering loyalty and respect. His bond with Filo is the centerpiece of his later character, as he seeks her approval and company constantly. His conflict with Malty leads to his ruin and eventual rebirth. With the other heroes, Ren and Itsuki, his initial arrogance creates friction, but he eventually sides with Naofumi's group. By the time of Season 4, Motoyasu has become a fiercely loyal ally who protects Naofumi's domain with zeal. His character development, while abrupt, shows a trajectory from a manipulated antagonist to a deeply eccentric but reliable hero who learns from his past mistakes, albeit through an extreme personality shift.
