Description
Naofumi Iwatami is the central protagonist of The Rising of the Shield Hero, a university student from modern Japan who is summoned along with three other young men to the kingdom of Melromarc to serve as one of the four Cardinal Heroes, tasked with defending the world from the Waves of Calamity. He is assigned the Legendary Shield, a weapon that grants him immense defensive power but no direct offensive capabilities. His initial personality is optimistic, trusting, and enthusiastic about his new role, but this changes abruptly after he is betrayed and falsely accused of sexual assault by Princess Malty S. Melromarc, the first person to befriend him. The accusation, combined with the prejudice and ostracism he faces from the kingdom, the other heroes, and its citizens, leads Naofumi to become deeply cynical, distrustful of others, and bitterly pragmatic. He adopts a cold, hostile demeanor and is willing to use underhanded methods, threats, and slave contracts to ensure his survival and the protection of his party.
Despite this hardened exterior, Naofumi’s motivations are rooted in a desire to survive, protect those who genuinely support him, and eventually clear his name. He views his role as a hero as a burden imposed against his will, but he nonetheless takes his responsibilities seriously, often proving to be the most effective and strategic of the four legendary heroes. His primary drive in the first season is to overcome the betrayal and build a team he can rely on, which begins when he purchases the demi-human slave Raphtalia. Through her unwavering loyalty and defense, Naofumi slowly opens up, begins to trust again, and comes to see Raphtalia and the filolial Filo as his foster children. In Season 2, his character development builds on this foundation: he has largely moved past his initial hatred, though he remains cautious, sarcastic, and prone to pretending to be a villain for effect. He now focuses on strengthening his party, rebuilding Lurolona Village (Raphtalia’s hometown), and preparing for the larger threats posed by the Waves and the Guardian Beasts.
Naofumi’s role in the story is that of the misunderstood Shield Hero who, despite being despised and underestimated, consistently outperforms his fellow heroes by employing clever tactics, careful resource management, and a deep understanding of his shield’s abilities. He often cleans up the chaos left behind by the Sword, Spear, and Bow Heroes, and becomes a natural leader during crises such as the Spirit Tortoise incident. His key relationships include his deep, parental bond with Raphtalia, who is his most trusted companion and a symbol of his restored faith in humanity; Filo, whom he treats like a daughter; and his later camaraderie with allies such as the queen Mirellia Q. Melromarc, the merchant L’arc Berg, and the vassal weapon holder Rishia Ivyred. His antagonistic relationships with Malty and the king Aultcray drive much of his earlier conflict, but by Season 2 he has largely moved beyond direct vengeance.
Naofumi’s development is marked by a shift from a traumatized, isolationist survivor to a more emotionally open and effective leader. He learns to accept help, delegate tasks, and care for his growing family of companions, all while maintaining a pragmatic and sometimes morally grey approach. His notable abilities stem from his Legendary Shield, which can absorb materials to unlock new forms and skills. He is nearly invulnerable to physical attacks, immune to most poisons, and can deploy defensive barriers such as Air Strike Shield, Shield Prison, and Shooting Star Shield to protect allies or trap enemies. His most powerful ability is the Curse Series, particularly the Shield of Wrath, which unleashes black flames fueled by his anger at the cost of temporary stat reduction and risk of losing control. In Season 2, during the Spirit Tortoise arc, he also gains access to the Spirit Tortoise Heart Shield, which grants an energy blast. Later, while in a different world, his Legendary Shield is disabled, and he becomes the new Vassal Mirror Hero, gaining a set of mirror-based abilities. Despite lacking direct offense, Naofumi’s combat style relies on his high defense, support skills, and the offensive power of his companions, making him the anchor of his party in both battle and strategy.
