Description
Mio Akiyama attends Sakuragaoka High School. Initially planning to join the literature club, her childhood friend Ritsu Tainaka persuades her into the Light Music Club instead. She becomes the bassist, playing a left-handed Fender Jazz Bass in 3-Tone Sunburst nicknamed "Elizabeth," selected due to preferring the bass role's lower profile compared to lead guitar. Academically gifted, she consistently ranks in her grade's top ten. Her personality is reserved, private, and socially anxious, marked by a pronounced fear of horror stories, the supernatural, gore, and trypophobia. She embarrasses easily, especially regarding attention, and faces frequent teasing from Ritsu and club advisor Sawako Yamanaka.
During the club's first school festival performance, she substitutes as lead vocalist when Yui Hirasawa loses her voice. Afterward, tripping on a cable exposes her underwear to the audience. This incident causes lasting trauma but also has the unintended consequence of making her extremely popular schoolwide, leading to a dedicated fan club. Her resulting popularity results in classmates voting her into the role of Romeo in a class play against her objections. As the band's primary songwriter, she composes most of their music, often featuring overly girlish or confessional lyrics that contrast with her reserved demeanor. She serves as the secondary vocalist, possessing a warm soprano voice providing a counterpoint to Yui's higher vocals, though she avoids lead singing whenever possible. Her bass playing is technically proficient, favoring walking basslines and rhythmic synchronization with Ritsu's drumming, while incorporating techniques like slides, arpeggios, and chromatic scales.
Over her high school years, she gradually develops greater self-assurance. She becomes the band's primary advocate for focused practice and takes on a protective, sisterly role toward underclassman Azusa Nakano, reassuring her during doubts about the club's direction and mediating conflicts between Azusa and other members. In her third year, she prioritizes friendships over academic prestige, declining a distinguished university recommendation to attend the same women's university as Ritsu, Yui, and Tsumugi Kotobuki. She participates more freely in her friends' activities, performs at a summer rock festival, and overcomes some reluctance toward attention, eventually accepting her fan club's admiration. At university, she joins the light music club with her high school bandmates and new acquaintances like Sachi Hayashi and Ayame Yoshida, showing increased comfort in social interactions and new experiences.
Physically, she stands 160 cm tall with straight black hair and gray-blue eyes, possessing a more developed bust than most peers except Tsumugi. Her attire preferences include wearing pants under skirts and favoring sleeveless tops like tank tops in summer. Her room is tidy but lacks overtly cute decorations due to self-consciousness. She excels in all academic subjects and sports, enjoys gateau au chocolat, and spends solitary time studying or songwriting.
