TV-Series
Description
Marika Kato, daughter of former space pirate "Blaster Ririka" Kato and the late Gonzaemon Kato, former captain of the pirate ship Bentenmaru, initially led an ordinary life as a high school student at Hakuoh Academy on the planet Sea of the Morning Star in the Tau Ceti system. There, she joined the space yacht club and worked part-time as a cheerful waitress at the retro-themed Lamp House café. Following her father's death, Marika inherited the Bentenmaru's captaincy through direct lineage, a requirement of the Letter of Marque legalizing the ship. Her great-grandfather Bunzaemon Kato served as the first Bentenmaru captain under this system, making Marika the fourth-generation captain.

She possesses long pink-orange hair and light blue eyes, with visual depictions varying:
- Light novels show her in a black captain's coat with gold highlights, a bicorne hat bearing a pirate emblem, a red checkered skirt, and black boots. Her hair color and facial features evolved across novels toward the anime style.
- The anime features orange hair extending past her waist, often styled with two clips near her left eye. Her school uniform includes a blazer, white collared shirt, red ribbon, and thigh-length skirt. Her pirate uniform layers elements of her school attire beneath a black coat with gold highlights and skull emblems on the upper arms, a pale-yellow ribbon with a green gem clip, and a brown waistcoat. A black cape with maroon interior attaches to shoulder guards, and she carries a sword on a red belt. Friend Mami Endo later modified this uniform, adding accessories like an orange neck ribbon, red cuffs with yellow frills, and a white feather-tipped cape during the Hakuoh Pirates and Nebula Cup arcs. For the Abyss of Hyperspace film, she wore a red variant with a black cape, green shoulder strap, and brown belt.
- The manga blends novel and anime designs, depicting a black coat with gold highlights, white cuffs, a neck ribbon, shoulder guards, an orange-red skirt, boots, and a bicorne hat.

Marika exhibits a cheerful, optimistic, and charismatic personality, occasionally masking her cunning intelligence with apparent naivety or clumsiness. As captain, she prioritizes crew safety above all but accepts calculated risks for long-term gains. A diligent worker prone to exhaustion, she frequently oversleeps and struggles to wake. Her leadership involves rapid decision-making, maintaining composure under pressure, and evaluating all options and tools for optimal outcomes. She excels at strategic planning, anticipating adversaries, and devising unconventional solutions.

Her skills encompass expert piloting, demonstrated by impressing veteran helmsman Kane McDougal in a dinghy simulation and evading machine-gun fire during the Nebula Cup. She holds a shuttle operator's license and shows proficiency in swordplay, firearms, hand-to-hand combat, spacewalking, electronic warfare, navigation, and model-making. Familiarity with the Bentenmaru's systems and experience from the yacht club, operating vessels like the Odette II, bolster her capabilities. Practical talents from her café job, including waitressing and parfait-making, also apply; she once recreated her family's secret pot-au-feu recipe after discovering it.

Key relationships shape her:
- With mother Ririka: They share a relaxed, trusting bond where Marika uses "Ririka-san." Marika deeply admires her mother but remains unaware of certain withheld family secrets regarding her father and heritage.
- With Mami Endo: Her closest friend since middle school provides emotional support and designs modifications for her pirate and yacht club uniforms.
- With Chiaki Kurihara: Initially sent to observe Marika's captain suitability, Chiaki evolves into a trusted ally and fellow pirate heir. Despite Chiaki's stoic demeanor, mutual respect develops through collaborative missions.
- With Gruier and Grunhilde Serenity: Gruier first sought the Bentenmaru's aid to find the Golden Ghost Ship, forming a friendship based on admiration for Marika's judgment. Grunhilde's initial hostility shifted to loyalty after shared experiences; both sisters later assist with yacht club activities and piracy.
- With her crew: Misa Grandwood mentors her in piracy and crew management, while Bentenmaru veterans like Kane, Schnitzer, and Coorie support her leadership transition. Her charismatic, pragmatic approach secures their loyalty during arcs like the Golden Ghost Ship and Nebula Cup.

Marika balances academic life, café work, and piracy while gaining captaincy confidence. This growth unfolds through storylines like the search for Professor Mugen's legacy in Abyss of Hyperspace, where she leads high-stakes operations in her red uniform, and later arcs like the Three Ships and Skull Star, where her tactical ingenuity solidifies her reputation.
