Description
Shinkurō Kurenai is a 16-year-old high school student who serves as a dispute mediator, specializing in resolving conflicts between individuals. Orphaned young after a terrorist attack claimed his family, he grew reclusive until Benika Jūzawa took him in as both employer and mentor. She placed him under the care of the Hōzuki household, where he received intensive training in Hōzuki-style martial arts. This regimen honed his body and skills, making him a capable fighter despite his youthful and relaxed demeanor.

He lives in the dilapidated Samidare Apartments and maintains a kind and patient attitude, which draws considerable female attention—though he remains largely unaware of these affections. In crises, he can manifest a large, blade-like horn from his right elbow, identifying him as a “Type 1 Class 2 Fighting Demon.” This biological weapon, originally designed for assassination, grants him supernatural combat strength at the cost of shortening his lifespan. Its activation often unleashes a more aggressive side of his personality. His mastery over this ability and his general confidence vary between the anime and manga, with the manga portraying him as more self-assured and in control.

His primary duty is acting as bodyguard for Murasaki Kuhōin, the seven-year-old daughter of an influential plutocratic family. Initially assigned to protect her and ease her transition into ordinary life, he quickly challenges her entitled behavior, teaching her to live as a commoner. A deep bond forms between them, and Murasaki grows intensely attached, even vowing to marry him when she grows older. This relationship becomes a central pillar of his life and a major force in his personal growth.

Driven by a powerful sense of duty, he willingly faces danger to protect others—especially Murasaki. When she is kidnapped and confined within her family’s oppressive Inner Sanctuary, he learns the truth of her imprisonment and vows to rescue her. He confronts the mighty Kuhōin family to learn her true wishes and ultimately helps free her from her predetermined fate, though the story’s conclusion differs across adaptations.

His connections extend beyond Murasaki. He holds deep respect for Benika Jūzawa, seeing her as a parental figure who pulled him from despair. His relationship with Yūno Hōzuki, his former sparring partner from the Hōzuki household, is complex; she possesses great strength and romantic feelings for him, often expressing them through threatening advances toward other girls nearby. Another key figure is Ginko Murakami, a childhood friend and information broker who regularly offers him safer work at her family’s ramen shop, hinting at her own unspoken affection. These ties form a network of influential women who often assume dominant roles in his life.

Across all versions of his story, he evolves from an insecure orphan into a resolute individual motivated by the desire to safeguard those he cares about, all within the dangerous and unusual world of dispute mediation.
