Makoto Misumi hails from Earth, born to parents originally from the Goddess' world. They made a contract with the Goddess, trading their Earth life for one future child destined to serve as her world's hero. Born on April 1st, his name "Makoto" (真), meaning "truth/reality," carries ironic weight. Unaware of the contract, he was summoned as a teenager. The Goddess, rejecting him based on her beauty standards and deeming him "ugly," revoked his hero status. She abandoned him at the world's edge in the Wasteland, simultaneously kidnapping two other Earthlings as replacement heroes. The moon god Tsukuyomi, the contract's intermediary, intervened, granting Makoto his blessing and power with the instruction to live freely.
Physically, Makoto is a short (160 cm) teenager with mid-length black hair and eyes. His Earth-average features are perceived as unattractive or monstrous in the Goddess' world, leading to frequent mistaken identity as a demi-human or kobold. Without suppression by his mana-absorbing Draupnir rings, his overflowing mana manifests as an ominous desert haze, radiating a powerful aura that evokes varied reactions. Intense emotional states cause his eyes to darken, taking on a lifeless, dangerous quality.
Makoto's personality blends naivety with latent darkness. Academically and athletically average, he relies on archery for emotional regulation and struggles without this outlet. He displays strong loyalty, particularly protective of younger individuals and fiercely opposed to bullies. This protectiveness extends to a willingness to destroy nations for his adopted family or followers. Yet, he possesses sociopathic tendencies, exhibiting cold, merciless judgment during threats. His first kill of a Hyuman adventurer triggered a breakdown over perceived loss of humanity, though followers Tomoe and Mio later reassured him their contracts enhanced their humanity through his influence. Unconsciously, he discriminates against Hyumans due to early negative experiences—starting with the Goddess's rejection and reinforced by hostile, racist encounters with Hyuman adventurers. This bias contrasts with his acceptance by non-human races.
Key relationships define his journey. He forms ruling contracts with three powerful beings: Tomoe (Greater Dragon Shen), Mio (Black Spider of Calamity), and Shiki (Elder Lich). These bonds grant him access to their abilities during crises and emotional turmoil. Tomoe and Mio develop romantic feelings for him, though he remains largely oblivious, a trait noted by his elder sister regarding his tendency to view confessing girls as "family." As a ruler, he established Asora, a demiplane sanctuary for marginalized races like orcs, dwarves, lizardmen, and demons, prioritizing those facing discrimination. He models Asora as a paradise demanding racial harmony and rejecting discrimination. Despite his humility and discomfort with being worshipped as a deity, his citizens revere him, offering prayers at shrines.
His abilities center on immense, deity-level mana reserves requiring Draupnir rings to prevent overflow. This mana enables versatile magic, including unique "Sakai" (boundary manipulation) and "creation" magic manifested through silver weapons. Combat often triggers an unconscious smile, especially when defending deeply held values—such as his parents' honor, which provoked a lethal response against the self-proclaimed god Samal. He employs strategic ruthlessness, eliminating assassins or threats like the Shadowless class operatives sent by the hero Tomoki without hesitation, justifying it as necessary defense.
Chronologically, he progressed from survival to nation-building. After rescue by Tsukuyomi, early encounters include aiding Highland Orcs, contracting Tomoe, and subduing Mio. He created Asora through his pact with Tomoe, relocating persecuted races there. Attempts to integrate into Hyuman society near the Wasteland failed due to language barriers and mana-induced fear, leading him to adopt the merchant alias "Raidou Kuzunoha" (or "Makoto Kuzunoha" in adaptations). In Tsige, he established the Kuzunoha Company, prioritizing fair trade and employing demi-humans without discrimination. His neutrality in the hero-demon conflict solidified after confronting the Goddess and other summoned heroes: he refused Hibiki Otonashi's alliance against demons, declared the Goddess unworthy of divinity, and defeated Tomoki Iwahashi for threatening Tomoe.
Expanding his influence, he engaged with major powers—delivering dragon eggs to the Empire and Demon Kingdom, where he earned hero status by thwarting a terrorist attack using "creation" magic to neutralize an apocalyptic spell. Within Academy Town (Rotsgard), he became a part-time instructor while navigating political tensions. His actions cemented the Kuzunoha Company as an untouchable third force in the world's power structure.
