Description
Ryoko Hakubi is a synthetic humanoid born from the genetic fusion of Washu Hakubi, a universe-creating Choushin goddess, and an aquatic lifeform named Masu. This binary cloning aimed to create an entity capable of wielding three powerful gems containing Washu's energy. Shortly after her creation, Washu's assistant Kagato abducted Ryoko, enslaving her and forcing her to execute destructive missions, including the decimation of 28 planets and 69 colonies. During her enslavement, Kagato suppressed her emotions and prevented meaningful connections, driving Ryoko to seek fleeting sensations through substances and physical relationships—largely ineffective due to her unique physiology.

Following an attack on the planet Jurai to capture the goddess Tsunami, Jurai's Crown Prince Yosho pursued Ryoko to Earth. After a battle, Yosho sealed her within a cave near the Masaki Shrine using energy from her gems, imprisoning her for 700 years. Her release occurred when Tenchi Masaki, Yosho's descendant, accidentally broke the seal. Centuries of isolation and pent-up rage fueled her initial hostility toward Tenchi, but this gradually transformed into deep romantic feelings, marking her shift toward a more stable life while retaining her free-spirited nature and aversion to responsibility. Her criminal record was eventually expunged due to the statute of limitations stemming from her long imprisonment.

Ryoko's personality exhibits emotional volatility, impulsiveness, and a lack of social awareness—consequences of her disrupted adolescence under Kagato and extended isolation. She displays childlike gullibility, mercurial mood swings, and intense sensitivity about her age. Her rivalry with Princess Ayeka Masaki Jurai is consistent across continuities, though its origin varies: in the OVA, it stems from her attack on Jurai, while in Tenchi Universe, it appears as a lifelong antagonism without direct ties to planetary destruction. Despite her brash exterior, Ryoko demonstrates loyalty and self-sacrifice, particularly a willingness to die for Tenchi.

Her abilities derive primarily from the three gems, granting energy projection, flight, teleportation, intangibility, and duplication. These powers are more gem-dependent in the OVA continuity, whereas the Tenchi Universe iteration retains basic capabilities like energy blasts without direct gem linkage and lacks demon-summoning. Ryoko is partnered with Ryo-Ohki, a shapeshifting cabbit (cat-rabbit hybrid) that transforms into a starship, sharing a symbiotic bond where Ryo-Ohki serves as both companion and vessel.

Character development unfolds across media. Her relationship with Washu evolves from fear and resentment to reluctant acceptance, exemplified when Ryoko agrees to fuse with Washu's creation Zero to gain emotional depth and enhanced knowledge. Later OVA storylines show increased maturity, such as her participation in resolving the Choubimaru incident and engaging with family dynamics at the Masaki residence. Future timelines, including the *Tenchi Sokuhou* doujinshi and OVA 5, confirm she bears a daughter with Tenchi, though the child's name remains unspecified.

Spin-offs present divergent portrayals: the *Daughter of Darkness* film shows initial hostility toward a girl claiming to be Tenchi's daughter, followed by eventual acceptance after conflict. *Ai Tenchi Muyo!* features dual timelines with Ryoko as a space pirate in feudal Japan and the present day, displaying an additional rivalry with Beni Kinojyou. The Hasegawa novels, diverging from main continuity, blend elements of both OVA and Tenchi Universe iterations. Throughout all media, Ryoko's core traits—intense love for Tenchi, rivalry with Ayeka, and gradual emotional growth—remain central to her identity.
