Description
Karen Ichijou is a second-year student in class 2-C who presents a quiet and gentle exterior that belies her true nature as one of the strongest characters in her school. Standing 160 centimeters tall with green hair and black eyes, she maintains a shy and introverted demeanor that often causes her to blush when receiving compliments or when her personal feelings are brought to light. Her birthday is January 7th, and her blood type is A.

The defining characteristic of Karen is her monstrous physical strength, which exists in stark contrast to her delicate and feminine appearance. This power is so immense that she is arguably stronger than even the most robust male students, such as Kenji Harima and Haruki Hanai. Proof of this lies in her ability to carry a piano by herself without any visible strain, a feat that left her male classmates struggling and on the verge of collapse when they attempted the same task. Her strength has been demonstrated in other ways as well, such as crushing a whole apple with her bare hand and inadvertently nearly suffocating her friend Tenma Tsukamoto while trying to cover her mouth to prevent a secret from being revealed. This suggests that she has difficulty fully controlling her own power.

This incredible physical prowess is the result of her dedication to amateur wrestling, a sport she practices as a member of her school's wrestling club. Her technical skill in this area is highly advanced, allowing her to perform professional maneuvers such as the German Suplex and her own signature move, the Nymph's Dance, a version of the Frankensteiner. Interestingly, Karen does not always consciously intend to use these moves; rather, her body reacts instinctively when she feels challenged, often leaving her confused and apologetic after the fact. Her only true rival in terms of strength and wrestling ability is Lala Gonzalez. While Lala harbors a competitive and antagonistic attitude towards her, Karen remains consistently polite and courteous, and the two eventually develop a friendship. Her talents are not limited to athletics; she is also an accomplished singer, capable of performing songs in English, and serves as the lead vocalist for class 2-C's band.

Despite her imposing physical capabilities, Karen is a deeply timid and caring individual. She is responsible and hardworking, shown when she takes her school cleaning duties seriously while her classmates neglect them, and she also takes on a part-time job at a moving company. At this job, her coworkers refer to her as Ichi-san, a nickname born from her ability to out-lift the men. This kind of work, while suited to her strength, ironically fuels her insecurities about her own femininity.

The central focus of Karen's personal story is her romantic feelings for her classmate, Kyousuke Imadori. She harbors a significant crush on him but becomes easily embarrassed and flustered whenever the subject is raised. Her shy nature makes it difficult for her to approach him directly. For his part, Imadori initially keeps his distance from her, partly due to her modest breast size, which conflicts with his obsession for larger measurements, but also out of a genuine fear of her fantastic strength. Their relationship takes a tentative step forward when Imadori, after a day of working together at the moving company, accidentally asks her out on a date using his earnings. Karen agrees to the date despite his lack of genuine intent at the moment. Throughout the series, Karen demonstrates her protective nature towards Imadori, such as when she uses her apple-crushing strength to scare off a thug threatening him and later by coming to his defense against the aggressive advances of Lala Gonzalez. Her loyalty extends beyond her love interest; she is a caring friend who shows deep kindness to others. For instance, she comforts Tenma when she is depressed about her own romantic troubles and refuses to shoot her friend Mikoto Suo during a survival game out of the fear of accidentally hitting her close friend Megumi Sagano.

Karen's role in the larger story is often as a supporting but formidable presence. She is a key contributor to her class's victory in the Sports Festival's Kibasen event, where she uses her agility and strength in tandem with Haruki Hanai to secure a win. She also showing her athletic versatility by joining the girls' basketball team. Her character arc focuses on her quiet perseverance in the face of her own insecurities and the unlikelihood of her romantic pursuit. While she often lacks confidence, she is determined and continues to try to connect with Imadori. In later material, such as School Rumble Z, this persistence pays off in a significant way when Imadori, after witnessing her victory in a wrestling match, gifts her a ring. This act serves as a powerful symbol of mutual respect and a deepening of their ambiguous bond, even if the romantic outcome remains unspoken. Karen Ichijou is ultimately a character defined by the contrasts within her: a powerful soul housed in a gentle, shy girl, constantly striving to balance her hidden strengths with her desire for a simple, loving connection.
