TV-Series
Description
Hatsuharu Soma, known as Haru, has an immediately recognizable appearance: two-toned white and black hair, brown eyes, and a height of 170.2 cm. His punk-inspired style features multiple ear piercings, leather accessories, chains, and a green band tattoo on his right arm. He typically wears his school uniform unbuttoned and without a tie.
Haru exhibits a Jekyll-and-Hyde duality: "White Haru" is calm, respectful, and softly spoken, while "Black Haru" emerges under stress or provocation, becoming loud, aggressive, vulgar, and physically confrontational. This aggressive persona originated in childhood as a defense against Sohma family taunts labeling him unintelligent, inspired by the zodiac legend where the Ox was tricked by the Rat. He remains conscious during these uncontrollable episodes, often apologizing afterward. Haru also possesses a notoriously poor sense of direction, frequently getting lost for hours.
Cursed as the Ox of the Chinese zodiac, he transforms into a black-and-white spotted cow when embraced by the opposite sex or under intense physical or emotional strain. This curse breaks during the series finale while he shares a quiet moment of mutual comfort with Isuzu Sohma (Rin).
Haru harbored childhood resentment towards Yuki Sohma (the Rat), blaming him for the family's taunts. This changed when Yuki confronted him, asking if Haru truly believed himself stupid; realizing the manipulation, Haru developed deep loyalty and affection for Yuki, considering him his "first love." He later arranged for Yuki to live with Shigure Sohma to escape abuse at the main house.
His secret romantic relationship with Rin began in adolescence, including physical intimacy, due to fear of Akito Sohma's retaliation. When Akito discovered them, Rin accepted blame and was pushed from a second-story window, sustaining severe injuries. Rin then ended the relationship to protect Haru, claiming disinterest. Haru remained unaware of her true motives until Hiro Sohma revealed the truth, prompting Haru to confront Akito and search for Rin. They reconciled after he found her collapsed and carried her to safety, vowing support.
Haru demonstrates fierce protectiveness towards younger zodiac members, particularly Kisa Sohma and Hiro Sohma (who calls him "Haru-nii"). He maintains complex relationships, frequently teasing Kyo Sohma while sometimes provoking fights, and shares camaraderie with Momiji Sohma.
Following the curse's end, Haru marries Rin and they have fraternal twins: a daughter, Sora, and a son, Riku. His relationship with his parents remains ambiguous; they enrolled him in martial arts to manage childhood anger, their reactions suggesting a mix of concern and detachment.
