Description
Sephiroth originated from Project S, an offshoot of the Jenova Project directed by Professor Gast and later Professor Hojo. Unborn, he received injections of cells from Jenova, an extraterrestrial entity incorrectly identified as a Cetra. His mother, Lucrecia Crescent, endured these experiments to carry him to term, resulting in his hybrid physiology. Immediately after birth, Hojo took Sephiroth from Lucrecia and oversaw his upbringing. His early training enforced emotional detachment and endurance through physical pain, instilling a belief that true strength demanded a "ruthless heart devoid of hesitation."
As Shinra's inaugural SOLDIER prototype, Sephiroth attained celebrity status through initially fabricated, and later genuine, battlefield achievements. His first combat mission occurred in Rhadore, where he effortlessly eliminated enemy soldiers but grappled with the moral consequences, particularly after reluctantly granting a mercy killing to the last Rhadoran boy, Rosen. This event deeply affected him, fostering a desire to "break the cycle of hatred in war with compassion." During the Wutai War, he formed strong bonds with fellow SOLDIERs Angeal Hewley and Genesis Rhapsodos. Their eventual defections and degradations caused him significant turmoil. Sephiroth began questioning his loyalty to Shinra, notably refusing a mission to eliminate Genesis and Angeal.
The Nibelheim Incident triggered Sephiroth's descent into madness. Investigating monster sightings at the Mt. Nibel reactor alongside SOLDIER Zack Fair and infantryman Cloud Strife, Sephiroth discovered pods of failed experiments and a chamber labeled "Jenova." Genesis Rhapsodos appeared, revealing Sephiroth's origins as a product of the Jenova Project. This revelation, combined with Hojo's research notes in Shinra Manor, led Sephiroth to falsely believe he was the last Cetra and that humanity had betrayed his ancestors. Consumed by rage, he burned Nibelheim and slaughtered its inhabitants. At the reactor, he incapacitated Tifa Lockhart and defeated Zack before Cloud impaled him from behind and threw him into the Lifestream.
Immersed in the Lifestream, Sephiroth's consciousness absorbed its knowledge, granting near-godlike capabilities. He gained the ability to manifest physical forms through individuals infused with Jenova cells, interacting with the physical world while his true body remained crystallized in the Northern Crater. His objectives shifted to summoning Meteor to wound the planet, forcing the Lifestream to gather for healing, enabling him to merge with it and ascend to godhood. This plan involved manipulating Cloud Strife, whose Jenova cells made him susceptible. Sephiroth exploited Cloud's mental fragility, positioning himself as a symbol of Cloud's trauma and failures.
Physically, Sephiroth possesses silver hair, cat-like green eyes, and a tall, lean frame. He wears a long black coat with pauldrons, leather attire, and knee-high boots. His signature weapon is the Masamune, an elongated ōdachi-style blade he wields with exceptional mastery. Post-Lifestream integration, he often manifests a single black wing from his right shoulder, symbolizing his corrupted divinity. His combat abilities blend superhuman physicality with advanced magical prowess. He commands telekinesis, levitation, teleportation, and materia-less spellcasting, including elemental magics and dimensional attacks like Supernova. Notable techniques include Shadow Flare, Octaslash, and Heartless Angel. His control over Jenova cells allows him to manipulate clones and project illusions globally.
In later confrontations, such as the events of Advent Children, Sephiroth continued targeting Cloud, aiming to inflict despair by threatening those Cloud cherished. He temporarily resurrected through Kadaj's merger with Jenova cells, reiterating his refusal to "become a memory" and implying his consciousness persists within the Lifestream.
