Description
Hinata Sugai is a supporting character residing at Saienji Temple, embodying the Naraka Realm of Buddhist cosmology, synonymous with the Hell Realm. Adopted into the family after her parents' death during childhood, she is the younger sister of Sakura Sugai. Following an unspecified incident where head nun Jotoku recognized Hinata's spiritual connection to Naraka, both sisters entered temple life, Sakura insisting on accompanying her.
Petite in stature at 1.52 meters tall, Hinata possesses hip-length violet hair and brown eyes. Her personality is notably calm, reserved, and taciturn; she rarely speaks or shows overt emotion. A constant companion is her small fire-spitting demon pet, called Devilkin or Master Devil, perched on her shoulder. This creature serves as both familiar and manifestation of her spiritual power, transforming into a full-sized demon when her control over Naraka energy falters.
Her primary hobby involves collecting and studying haniwa, ancient Japanese clay funerary figures. This interest features prominently when she joins her school's smallest club, the Haniwa Research Club, participating in a field trip to an ancient burial ground. Hinata occasionally displays subtle mischief, like teasing Yuuko Atouda by labeling her actions "manly".
Hinata wields powers tied to the Hell Realm, channeled primarily through her demon companion. A key tactical role emerges later: she frequently commands the demon to burn Ikkou Satonaka to prevent his uncontrolled spiritual "awakening", an intervention growing more deliberate across the series. Her powers face significant challenges, particularly in the second season amidst threats like Kazuki Kazusano, intensifying her instability. This culminates in a perilous training mission to the Danda Cave with Ikkou, where mastering her abilities becomes critical for survival.
Her relationship with Sakura remains foundational, marked by mutual devotion; Sakura frequently mothers her and prioritizes her well-being. While Hinata's interactions with Ikkou are often functional or combative (using her demon to suppress him), subtle hints suggest she may harbor undeveloped feelings for him, their nature remaining ambiguous.
