Description
Yui Hongo, Miaka Yuki's childhood friend, begins as an intelligent, mature, and academically driven 15-year-old. She possesses blonde hair cut short to deter male attention, blue eyes, and stands 162 cm tall. Her personality blends confidence and practicality with deep-seated insecurity, resulting in a tendency to perceive betrayal and react with intense emotional volatility. Though fundamentally compassionate, she often views the world through a rigidly binary lens.
Her journey activates upon transportation into the Universe of the Four Gods alongside Miaka. After a brief return to the real world, she reenters the book to aid Miaka but becomes permanently trapped. Bandits immediately attack her, leaving her unconscious. She awakens believing she was raped, leading to a distraught suicide attempt. Nakago rescues her, conceals that the assault was interrupted, and manipulates her vulnerable state by blaming Miaka for her suffering. Exploiting Yui’s growing attraction to Tamahome, Nakago convinces her to become the Priestess of Seiryuu to seek revenge.
As Priestess of Seiryuu, Yui gains abilities including a protective barrier and the power to summon the god Seiryuu for three wishes. Her first wish seals Suzaku’s powers, stripping Miaka’s Celestial Warriors of their abilities. Her second wish transports herself and Miaka back to the real world to separate Miaka from Tamahome, though Tamahome follows. Driven by jealousy and resentment, she later realizes Nakago’s ambitions threaten universal destruction. Witnessing the devastation of her world, including threats to her family and friends, she experiences profound regret. For her third wish, she sacrifices herself to Seiryuu, lifting Suzaku’s seal and begging Miaka to save both worlds. Miaka subsequently uses a wish to rescue Yui.
Following these events, Yui enters a relationship with Tetsuya Kajiwara, a friend of Keisuke Yuki. In later OVAs, including the Demon God arc, she displays significant maturation. When the entity Tenkou threatens both worlds, she actively assists Miaka and Tamahome, positioning herself in danger to protect others. She resists manipulation attempts by antagonists like Shigyou Renhou, who exploit her residual jealousy regarding Miaka’s relationship with Taka (Tamahome’s reincarnation). Her loyalty to Miaka becomes absolute, though she remains wary of prolonged involvement in the book world. This period concludes with her achieving personal redemption and emotional peace.
