OVA
Description
Gon Freecss is a young boy from Whale Island, distinguished by his long, spiky black hair with green tips and large, expressive hazel-brown eyes. His typical attire consists of a green jacket with reddish edges over a dark tank top, green shorts, and lace-up boots, though during the Greed Island arc, he is often seen without the jacket, wearing only the tank top. During this time, he also wears the Paladin's Necklace, a card from the game with the ability to purge external effects from a card the wearer is holding.
Growing up, Gon was told that his parents had died in an accident. However, at the age of nine, he was rescued from a foxbear by a man named Kite, who revealed he was a student of Gon's father, Ging Freecss, a legendary Hunter. This encounter sparked Gon's overwhelming desire to become a Hunter himself, not simply to find his father, but to understand what could be so compelling about the profession that it would cause a man to abandon his son.
Gon is characterized by a rustic, friendly, and energetic nature, with a simple-minded determination that is typical of an Enhancer Nen user. Having spent his childhood in the wilderness, he possesses superhuman senses, including a sense of smell as keen as a dog's, excellent vision, and a refined sense of taste. He is also remarkably good with animals. Despite his talents, he has notable flaws, including a quick temper and an impulsive nature. He can become irrational and oblivious to everything else when his emotions are ignited, often leading to extremely reckless behavior.
His morality is complex and not easily defined by conventional standards. He can separate his personal feelings from his ethics, allowing him to admire powerful and dangerous individuals like Hisoka for their strength, or thank a serial killer like Binolt for his help in training. He does not judge people by their past but reacts intensely to actions that threaten or disrespect the value of life and his friends, particularly when he perceives injustice.
Gon's entire journey is motivated by the singular goal of finding his father, Ging. His role in the Greed Island arc is a direct extension of this quest, as he discovers that his father was one of the creators of this rare, incredibly dangerous video game that exists in reality. Entering the game is a test in itself, requiring the use of Nen, and for Gon, completing Greed Island becomes the most direct path to locating Ging.
Throughout the story, Gon forms pivotal relationships. His closest companion is Killua Zoldyck, a boy his age from a family of assassins. They become inseparable friends and rivals, constantly pushing each other to grow stronger. During the Greed Island arc, he also trains under Biscuit Krueger, a powerful and experienced Hunter who recognizes their potential and puts them through rigorous training to hone their Nen abilities. His absent father, Ging, serves as the central, almost mythical figure that drives the plot, with the very existence of Greed Island being a challenge Ging set up for his son to overcome.
The Greed Island arc is a significant period of development for Gon. The game functions as an elaborate training ground where he and Killua are forced to master their Nen techniques under Biscuit's strict tutelage to survive. Gon's notable abilities grow considerably in this arc. As an Enhancer, he develops a powerful Hatsu, or personal Nen ability, which he names Jajanken, a rock-paper-scissors inspired technique. The rock is a simple, devastatingly powerful close-range punch. Paper is an emitted blast of aura for long-range attacks, and scissors is a sharp, blade-like Nen aura for cutting. This ability reflects his straightforward and creative nature. He also masters advanced Nen techniques such as Shu, which involves shrouding an object in aura, and Ko, which concentrates all of his aura into a single body part for a powerful attack or defense. Through his experiences in Greed Island, culminating in a grueling dodgeball match against the game master Razor and a final confrontation with the player killer Genthru, Gon transforms from a talented but inexperienced Nen user into a much more capable and strategic fighter, taking a major step toward the strength he believes he needs to finally meet his father.
