Description
Kirio Hikifune is a significant figure in the world of Soul Society, known for her role as a former captain of the 12th Division before being promoted to the prestigious Royal Guard, also known as Division Zero. She holds the title of "Ruler of Grain" and serves as the Second Officer of the Zero Division, also referred to as the "Divine General of the South." Her promotion came approximately 110 years before the main storyline, a move that was publicly framed as a retirement but was in fact an elevation to the Soul King's personal guard in recognition of her monumental contributions to Soul Society.

Her most notable achievement, and the very reason for her promotion, is the invention of the Artificial Soul. She developed the theory of artificial souls and the means to implant them into bodies, a creation that fundamentally changed Soul Society and paved the way for technologies like the Gikongan, or Soul Candy. This invention highlights her genius and her ability to manipulate the very essence of life, a theme that deeply influences her personality and abilities.

In terms of appearance, Hikifune is most often seen as a tall, plump woman with long purple hair styled into a bun, secured with a large silver, spoon-like ornament. She has distinctive red swirl-shaped markings on her cheeks and wears the standard Shinigami uniform beneath a white, long-sleeved captain's haori emblazoned with the Royal Guard's emblem. However, this is not her true form. Because her unique cooking method uses up nearly all of her Reiatsu, she is forced to gain a massive amount of weight to have enough spiritual energy to endure the process. Once she has expended her energy through cooking or battle, she reverts to her original, natural form: a slender, well-endowed, and beautiful woman with her long hair flowing down. This drastic transformation often leaves those who knew her previously, such as Captain Shinji Hirako, completely unable to recognize her.

Kirio Hikifune's personality is as vibrant and warm as her cooking. She is a fundamentally cheerful and upbeat individual who approaches life with a sunny disposition. This friendliness, however, does not preclude her from lashing out physically over minor slights, all while maintaining her cheerful demeanor. When Shinji Hirako fails to recognize her upon her return to Soul Society, she responds by striking him while smiling and scolding him. She also frequently keeps her boisterous and rowdy teammate, Tenjirō Kirinji, in line with physical force, often stepping in to explain things properly when he fails to do so. Despite her occasional use of violence and her eccentric passion as a chef, she possesses a deep, maternal instinct. During her time as a captain, her lieutenant, Hiyori Sarugaki, became deeply attached to her, loving her as a mother. Hikifune continues to display this maternal care even as a member of the Royal Guard, most notably when she gives Ichigo Kurosaki a package of rice balls as he rushes off to rejoin the fierce battle against the Wandenreich, worrying about him getting hungry. She takes immense pride in her cooking, viewing it as the ultimate form of creation, and is confident in her abilities, once declaring that no enemy can escape the cage of life she creates.

Her role in the story becomes critical during the Thousand-Year Blood War. After the devastating first invasion of the Wandenreich and the death of Captain-Commander Yamamoto, Hikifune descends to Soul Society with the rest of the Royal Guard. They take the injured captains and Ichigo Kurosaki up to the Soul King Palace for training and recovery. At her palace, known as Gatonden, she insists on feeding Ichigo and Renji Abarai a full-course meal. She explains that her food is imbued with Reiatsu, much like her invention the Soul Candy, and that eating it is essential to empower them for the life-threatening training ahead. She serves as a nurturing guide, preparing them for the next, more dangerous phase of their training with the unpredictable Ōetsu Nimaiya.

When Yhwach and his elite guard, the Schutzstaffel, invade the Soul King Palace, Hikifune takes a direct combat role. She secretly deploys her most powerful technique, the Cage of Life. She grows a massive, regenerating tree from remnants infused with her Reiatsu to form an inescapable prison. This living cage is uniquely defensive, as it absorbs any Reiatsu-based attacks directed at it, using that very energy to grow even faster and stronger, making it nearly impervious to the Quincy's spirit weaponry. Despite her confidence and power, she and the other Royal Guard members are ultimately overwhelmed by the Schutzstaffel after they are empowered by Yhwach's Auswählen. In a desperate final act, she expends the last of her energy, reverting to her slender form before being defeated. In the anime adaptation, she is shown engaging in a one-on-one fight with Pernida Parnkgjas before eventually sacrificing herself alongside other Royal Guard members to break a seal, allowing Senjumaru Shutara to unleash her Bankai. It is later revealed in a novel that she, like her comrades, was ultimately revived by the leader of the Royal Guard, Ichibē Hyōsube.

Kirio Hikifune's notable abilities are deeply intertwined with her philosophy that controlling food means controlling life. She is a master chef of the highest caliber, able to create astonishingly delicious and nutritious meals. Her true power lies in her ability to infuse the base ingredients of her cooking with her own Reiatsu, fundamentally altering their properties and creating food that can dramatically enhance the power of anyone who eats it. All ingredients for her special cuisine are created from her own body. Her Zanpakutō takes the form of a large wooden spatula or rice paddle, which she carries on her back and can use for both cooking and combat, even blocking attacks with it. She has demonstrated immense speed, enough to intercept attacks from the powerful Sternritter Lille Barro. As a member of the Royal Guard, her collective power is said to surpass the combined might of the entire Gotei 13, and she possesses the Ōken, the "King's Key," within her bones, granting her the authority to travel freely between the Soul King Palace and the Soul Society.
