Description
Milliardo Peacecraft, heir to the pacifist Sanc Kingdom, survived its destruction by the United Earth Sphere Alliance, which killed his parents and left only him and his younger sister Relena alive. Abandoning his name, he adopted the alias Zechs Merquise, concealing his identity behind a mask while joining the Alliance's military organization OZ. His devastating speed and piloting skills, demonstrated during a swift counter-terrorist mission near the Darlian estate in AC 191 where he encountered Relena unrecognized, earned him the moniker "Lightning Count."
Within OZ, Zechs formed a close bond with leader Treize Khushrenada, rising to become a trusted commander. His true motive was infiltration and revenge against the Alliance for his family's destruction. Despite his prowess as an ace pilot rivaling the Gundam pilots, particularly in repeated battles with Heero Yuy, he grappled with deep conflict between his soldier's life and his family's pacifist legacy. Believing himself unworthy of the Peacecraft name or restoring the Sanc Kingdom, he intended for Relena to assume that duty.
Zechs piloted iconic mobile suits, including the OZ-00MS Tallgeese in duels against the Wing Gundam. After its destruction, he commandeered the Wing Gundam Zero, mastering its overwhelming ZERO System. He later traded it to Heero for the OZ-13MS Gundam Epyon, also equipped with the ZERO System. His masked identity fractured publicly when the mask shattered in battle, severing his ties with OZ and Treize.
Following the collapse of the restored Sanc Kingdom and Relena's resignation, Zechs joined the colonial rebellion White Fang, becoming its commander. He spearheaded an assault on Earth using the battleship Libra, aiming to force human unity by triggering a perpetual winter ("Eve Wars"). Defeated in a final duel by Heero, who spared him for Relena's sake, Zechs destroyed Libra's main generator himself, seemingly perishing in the explosion though his body was never found.
By AC 196, Zechs resurfaced, abandoning his vendetta and joining the peacekeeping organization Preventers under the codename "Wind." During the Mariemaia Army uprising, he piloted the OZ-00MS2B Tallgeese III, using its mega beam cannon to prevent Dekim Barton from dropping a space colony on Earth. After the conflict, he disappeared again with his longtime ally Lucrezia Noin, traveling to the Moon. They later married and had twins named Naina and Mille Peacecraft.
In the sequel novel *Frozen Teardrop*, Zechs and Noin entered cryogenic sleep ("brain freeze") following an assassination attempt. Decades later, he reemerged as a political leader on Mars, ultimately becoming the Martian President. His story concluded advocating for peace alongside other surviving characters.
