Takeshi Kido is one of two teenagers chosen to defend the world from the evil entity Doruge (or Goumon in some versions). Born on the same day as his childhood friend Kentaro Shiratori, they both share a romantic interest in classmate Yuko Sugino. When monsters emerge from a lake to attack them, a benevolent being named Kopu grants them the power to transform into the fused superhero Barom-1. This transformation activates when they join hands, merging their physical and mental traits into a single entity.
Takeshi provides Barom-1's physical strength, while Kentaro contributes intelligence. Their combined friendship energy fuels the fusion, which breaks if they lose trust in each other. Kopu also gives them the Bopp, a device functioning as a threat radar that later transforms into their vehicle, the Mach-Rod. Takeshi initially embraces the superhero role more readily than Kentaro, who once gives Takeshi the Bopp to avoid involvement. However, the pair consistently reunites to battle monsters threatening their city.
Takeshi lives with his father Rintaro Kido, mother Yoshiko Kido, and sister Noriko Kido. Their identities as Barom-1 become public knowledge over time, creating complications. Takeshi once fabricated a story about an elephant rampaging at the zoo to evacuate civilians before a monster attack. The stakes intensify when Doruge's forces target or kidnap family members, including Takeshi's father.
As Barom-1, they possess flight, superhuman strength, infrared vision, and resistance to extreme environments. Key techniques derived from Takeshi's physical power include the Barom Bomb Punch, Barom Break shoulder tackle, and Barom Cut throw. Takeshi's role as the physical half of Barom-1 remains consistent across differing manga, live-action, and anime adaptations.
