Description
Subaru Sumeragi, thirteenth head of the ancient Sumeragi onmyōji clan serving the Japanese emperor, was born in Kyoto on February 19, 1974, as the younger fraternal twin to Hokuto Sumeragi. Intensive spiritual training began in early childhood. At nine, during his ascension ceremony, he met a mysterious man beneath a cherry blossom tree. This man, later revealed as Seishiro Sakurazuka, marked Subaru's hands with inverted pentagrams, symbols of the Sakurazukamori assassin clan, and imposed a memory veil. His grandmother then mandated he wear enchanted gloves to conceal the marks, a practice he maintained into adolescence.

As a teenager in Tokyo, Subaru lived with Hokuto and worked as an onmyōji, resolving supernatural cases involving spirit exorcisms, aiding lost souls, and entering comatose minds. His personality reflected profound empathy, kindness, and selflessness, often prioritizing others' welfare above his own. This manifested in self-destructive acts, like offering a kidney to a stranger or enduring physical harm to ease another's pain. He wore flamboyant outfits designed by Hokuto, who also encouraged his relationship with Seishiro, a veterinarian professing romantic interest. Despite suspicions about Seishiro's Sakurazukamori ties, Subaru dismissed them due to Seishiro's outwardly gentle demeanor.

A pivotal shift came when Seishiro lost his right eye protecting Subaru, prompting Subaru to recognize his love. Seishiro then revealed his identity and explained their childhood "bet": if they reunited, he would spend a year with Subaru to test if his emotions could stir. Declaring the bet lost, Seishiro attacked Subaru. His grandmother intervened, saving him at the cost of her mobility. The trauma left Subaru catatonic until he psychically sensed Hokuto's sacrifice – she demanded Seishiro kill her instead. Her death shattered Subaru’s innocence. He abandoned school, adopted a reserved demeanor, took up smoking mirroring Seishiro’s habit, and vowed revenge, dedicating himself to rigorous training.

In adulthood, Subaru appeared as a Dragon of Heaven in "X," tasked with protecting humanity. Though indifferent to the world's fate, his bond with Kamui Shiro, a youth facing similar trauma, drew him into the conflict. Encounters with Seishiro held unresolved tension; Seishiro repeatedly spared him, implying lingering attachment. During their final confrontation at Rainbow Bridge, Subaru admitted his true wish was not revenge but to die by Seishiro’s hand, desiring to remain in his memory. A spell from Hokuto reversed the killing blow, resulting in Subaru unintentionally killing Seishiro. The aftermath diverged:
- The manga depicts Subaru inheriting the Sakurazukamori title via ritual and joining the Dragons of Earth after receiving Seishiro’s eye to replace his own blinded one.
- The anime adaptation omitted the succession, showing Subaru falling catatonic before reawakening to aid Kamui in the final battle.

Later, in "Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle," an alternate Subaru appeared as a comatose vampire guarded by his twin Kamui. After awakening, he reunited with Kamui and expressed subdued concern for Seishiro’s counterpart. Yuuko Ichihara from "xxxHOLiC" also referenced an onmyōji with a twin sister, wishing for his happiness.

Subaru’s empathy remained core. Early cases, like easing a sexual assault survivor’s trauma by validating her pain without claiming to "understand" it, highlighted his compassionate methodology. Yet this empathy rendered him vulnerable to manipulation and psychological breakdown. Post-trauma, his kindness persisted, tempered by melancholy and isolation, reflecting the enduring cost of his selflessness.
