Description
Kichi is a red panda character exclusive to the anime adaptation of Rudyard Kipling's work. Originally from the Himalayas, he lived with his parents until hunting dogs and a poacher attacked them. His parents were captured during the violence, while Kichi escaped by falling into a stream. Discovered unconscious by the wolf Bacchus of the Seeonee pack, Kichi was later identified as a red panda by Bagheera.
Introduced in "The New Friends," Kichi suffers severe trauma from the attack that killed his parents. When Mowgli attempts to feed him, Kichi reacts with fear, biting Mowgli's hand and fleeing, associating humans with the poacher. Later, mourning his parents, Kichi encounters Shere Khan, leading Mowgli to rescue him. Escaping the tiger, Kichi licks the wound he inflicted on Mowgli, beginning their bond. Kichi expresses gratitude but remains confused by Mowgli's identity as a human raised by wolves.
Struggling to integrate into the Seeonee pack in "Solitary Kichi," his attempts cause unintentional disruptions: he frames Bacchus by dropping fruit on another wolf, interferes with Lala's hunt, and interrupts a wolves-only meeting, resulting in Mowgli's expulsion from a hunting party. This causes a temporary rift between them.
His isolation leaves him vulnerable to manipulation by the Bandar-log monkeys, who use him to set a trap for Mowgli at Shere Khan's behest. Warned by a bat (likely Mang), Mowgli rescues Kichi. After a confrontation forces Shere Khan off a cliff into a river, Kichi and Mowgli reconcile, solidifying their friendship.
Following these events, Kichi eventually lives with Mowgli in his hut. His arc reflects themes of loss, belonging, and the impact of human threats like poaching, paralleling real-world conservation challenges for red pandas.
In the German version, the character is called "Kiki," attributed to the casting of a female voice actor in the Japanese original.
