Description
Hikaru Ichijyo was born on November 4, 1992. After his mother's death in his childhood, his pilot father raised him until dying in a plane crash. Roy Focker, his father's stunt pilot colleague, then became his adolescent mentor. By age 16, Hikaru had won seven amateur flying competitions, showcasing exceptional skill. He worked as a stunt pilot in his father's flying circus, flying Fokker D.VII biplanes with Focker.
On February 7, 2009, Focker invited Hikaru to the SDF-1 Macross launch ceremony. During an unexpected Zentradi attack, Hikaru was accidentally launched in a VF-1D Valkyrie. This forced the pacifist-leaning Hikaru into combat. He rescued civilian Lynn Minmay during the battle. A space fold displaced the Macross near Pluto, stranding Hikaru and Minmay together in isolation within the ship for two weeks. This experience led him to enlist in the U.N. Spacy.
Hikaru saw significant combat in Space War I. A successful rescue mission earned him promotion to leader of the Vermillion Squadron. The deaths of Roy Focker and subordinate Hayao Kakizaki deeply affected him, contributing to depression, especially after Earth's devastation. His combat philosophy emphasized protection over aggression, shaping his leadership.
His personal life involved a love triangle with Lynn Minmay and superior officer Misa Hayase. Initially infatuated with Minmay, wartime experiences—including being stranded together on a ruined Earth and surviving a mission on a Zentradi ship—forged a bond with Hayase. Despite lingering feelings for Minmay, he recognized his deeper connection with Hayase. They married on October 10, 2011, having a daughter, Miku Ichijyo, the next year.
Post-war, Hikaru spent six months as a VF-4 Lightning III test pilot on the Apollo moon base. In 2012, he was appointed Skull Leader for the SDF-2 Megaroad-01 escort squadron, Earth's first long-range colonization ship commanded by his wife, Misa Hayase (now Ichijyo). Lynn Minmay joined as a cultural ambassador. At the ship's launch, depicted in newly animated footage, Hikaru piloted a VF-4 Lightning III in a ceremonial flight alongside the fleet. The Megaroad-01 mission aimed to explore the galactic core but lost contact with Earth in July 2016. Hikaru, his family, and the entire fleet were declared missing.
Hikaru evolved from a carefree stunt pilot to a disciplined military leader. Early traits included occasional clumsiness and emotional guardedness, attributed to his male-dominated upbringing. Wartime experiences fostered greater maturity and clarity in his values, particularly his commitment to protecting others and choosing Misa over Minmay. His lifelong passion for flight was reflected in his hobby of building plastic model aircraft, displayed in his military quarters.
