Description
Momoko Sakura, known as Chibi Maruko, is a third-grade elementary student living in Shimizu City's Irie District during 1974 Japan. Born May 8, 1965, she inhabits a six-member household with parents Hiroshi and Sumire, older sister Sakiko, and grandparents Tomozo and Kotake Sakura. This semi-autobiographical setting mirrors middle-class 1970s Japanese suburban life.

Her distinct appearance features short black hair with seven-bang locks and prominent pink cheeks. Standard attire includes a white long-sleeved blouse, red plaid pinafore skirt, white socks, and red shoes, switching to yellow short-sleeved shirts and red shorts in summer.

Cheerful and sociable, Maruko frequently displays laziness and forgetfulness—delaying homework, arriving late to school, or misplacing items like her school bag. She underperforms academically, especially in math, inviting maternal scolding. When challenged, her mood sours into pessimism, occasionally manifesting as backtalk or disobedience. These flaws anchor her averageness, fostering relatability through ordinary struggles.

Family interactions involve frequent quarrels with Sakiko over possessions, sometimes escalating to tears yet underscored by mutual care. Sumire alternates between reprimanding Maruko's irresponsibility and showing affection via gifts. She shares deep camaraderie with indulgent grandfather Tomozo, contrasting with reserved exchanges with grandmother Kotake.

Her social sphere includes best friend Tamae, close companions Yumiko and Toshiko, alongside variable relationships with classmates like Maeda and Migiwa—ranging from friendship to rivalry.

Passionate about manga and drawing, Maruko aspires to become a mangaka. She idolizes singer Momoe, dreams of singing or global travel, and pursues stamp collecting, ventriloquism, goldfish scooping (holding a 179-catch record), and dodoitsu performances. Favorite foods encompass french fries, meat patties, pudding, fried shrimp, and umeboshi rice balls; she avoids hikarimono sushi and raw tomatoes but overcame natto aversion with Sumire's guidance. Her treasured teddy bear, preferred blue hue, and ¥30 daily allowance complete her profile.

Across manga, anime, films, and spin-offs, Maruko's core traits remain consistent. Stories focus on humorous everyday mishaps within a fixed 1974–1975 timeline. Post-2018, new chapters and episodes continue via the creator's assistants and archives, preserving Maruko's established persona.
