Description
Renton Thurston, born to scientists in Warsaw, is the film's protagonist. His childhood forges a deep bond with Eureka, a girl vulnerable to sunlight. Together, they care for the mechanical Larva Nirvash, which communicates solely with Renton. Professor Dominic gifts them seeds of the rare snow moon flower, symbolizing hope and dreams with its rainbow bloom.
When soldiers forcibly remove Eureka, exposing her to harmful light, Renton witnesses her distress, haunted by his inability to help. This trauma fuels his determination, leading him to enlist as a child soldier eight years later. By 2054, aged 14, Renton demonstrates exceptional skill as an LFO pilot, achieving the rank of Corporal in the Independent Youths Unit 303. His first mission, retrieving a classified military asset with Commander Holland, goes awry; the Nirvash malfunctions, crashing into a structure where Renton unexpectedly reunites with Eureka.
Despite Eureka's reluctance, Renton prioritizes her safety. His fierce determination during her rescue triggers the Nirvash's transformation, unleashing the Fusion Phenomenon to repel attacking Eizo aliens. Holland then reveals Eureka herself is the classified asset, deepening Renton's confusion about military objectives.
Renton learns Eureka's true nature: an artificial intelligence created by the Eizo to gather human intelligence for invasion. She reveals her short lifespan, marked by fading red rings in her eyes, and recounts enduring painful experiments after capture. Renton rejects defining her by her origins, emphasizing their shared humanity forged in childhood. The Gekko crew, including Holland, disclose their own pasts as war orphans subjected to military experiments. They seek "Neverland," a realm of eternal youth, believing Renton and Eureka—the prophesied "chosen boy and girl"—hold the key to activating a crystal within Eureka.
Holland presents Renton an ultimatum: join the Gekko to reach Neverland and save Eureka, or oppose them and face her death. Renton initially accepts to secure Eureka's life. However, learning the Gekko's plan requires manipulating their dreams to reshape reality—conflicting with the military's impending "Hammer of God" counterattack—Renton shifts his stance. He commits to protecting Eureka from all threats, declaring war on the military, the Gekko, and the Eizo. This decision culminates in him confronting Holland, openly defying his objectives.
