Description
Lyserg Diethel was born on May 17, 1986, in London, England, to shaman parents Liam and Jane Diethel. At six years old, he witnessed Hao Asakura murder his parents after they refused to join him, igniting his lifelong quest for vengeance. After their deaths, he resided with his maternal grandfather until the latter's passing. Lyserg was then taken in by Oknox, a human trafficker who murdered Lyserg's friend Wat Hudson and attempted to kill Lyserg. Hao intervened, killing Oknox and leaving Lyserg orphaned and single-mindedly focused on finding his parents' killer.
Lyserg possesses an androgynous appearance, often mistaken for a girl, with light green hair and lime-green eyes inherited from his father. His initial attire paid homage to Sherlock Holmes: a green cloak, white shirt with a folded handkerchief, black pants, and leather shoes. Upon joining the X-Laws, he adopted their white uniform with an open skirt over white shorts and black boots. After training in hell, his outfit evolved into a black cloak with dark green lining, dark green shorts, and long sea boots.
Trained as a dowser by his father, Lyserg wields a Crystal Pendulum to locate people or objects and channel Over Souls. He employs high-speed rope-dart combat. His initial Furyoku measured 3,500, rising to 170,000 after hell training, ranking him second strongest among the Five Elemental Warriors. His primary guardian spirit is Morphine (renamed Morphea or Chloe in English adaptations), a poppy spirit passed down through his family. With the X-Laws, he gained the mechanical Archangel spirit Zeruel (Zelel). Later, he fused Morphine and Zeruel into the armor Over Soul Mastema Dolkeem, designed to contain his hatred. After hell training, he received the Spirit of Fire as his third spirit ally.
Qualifying for the Shaman Fight under Patch Officiant Bron, Lyserg joined Asakura Yoh's group to locate Patch Village. His first interaction involved hospitalizing Tao Ren and Horohoro in combat before Yoh subdued him; Yoh permitted him to join despite this. During their journey, Boris Tepes Dracula turned Lyserg into a vampire, but Yoh's group freed him. Witnessing the X-Laws' power against Boris cemented his decision to join them, forming Team "X-I" with Marco and Jeanne.
Within the X-Laws, Lyserg conflicted with their extremist methods, such as sacrificing allies like Team "X-III" against Hao. He frequently argued with Marco, who punished him for questioning tactics. After Marco's death, Lyserg kept his glasses as a memento. During the Shaman Fight, he confronted Bron, surviving an attack due to Marco's glasses and defeating Bron. His hell training, including temporary death, shifted his perspective. He rejoined Yoh's team for the final battle against Hao, where he received an elemental spirit. Post-series, he became a detective like his father.
Lyserg's character evolved from vengeance-driven isolation to tempered resolve. Though defined by hatred for Hao, Yoh's influence prevented him from embracing the X-Laws' extremism. His intelligence made him the cleverest of the Five Elemental Warriors, while his inherent kindness conflicted with anti-hero tendencies, especially regarding parent-child bonds.
