Description
Cagalli Yula Athha, born Cagalli Hibiki in May C.E. 55, is the biological daughter of Via and Ulen Hibiki and twin sister of Kira Yamato. Separated from Kira during a Blue Cosmos attack that killed their parents, she was adopted by Uzumi Nara Athha, Orb's Chief Representative. Raised as Orb's princess, Cagalli rebelled against aristocratic expectations, displaying a stubborn, free-spirited, and tomboyish personality. She often rejected the title "princess" and demonstrated proficiency in hand-to-hand combat, military tactics, and gunfighting.
Investigating Orb's secret collaboration with the Earth Alliance during the First Alliance-PLANT War, she traveled to Heliopolis colony. Witnessing its destruction, she escaped to Earth and joined the Desert Dawn resistance in North Africa, earning the nickname "Goddess of Victory" for her contributions. Aboard the Archangel, she encountered Kira Yamato, initially unaware they were siblings. After clashing over ideals during a failed retaliatory attack, she received mobile suit training and piloted the FX-550 Skygrasper. Later, she learned Kira was her twin when Uzumi provided a childhood photo before his death during Orb's invasion.
Cagalli developed a romantic relationship with ZAFT pilot Athrun Zala after meeting him on a deserted island, where they discussed the war's futility and shared a kiss. She piloted the MBF-02 Strike Rouge, notably activating the SEED factor—a genetic trait enabling heightened combat abilities—during a grief-induced rage after friends died in battle, making her the only known Natural to possess this trait.
Succeeding her father as Orb's Chief Representative during the Second Alliance-PLANT War, Cagalli faced political manipulation. She reluctantly agreed to an arranged marriage with Yuna Roma Seiran to secure an Earth Alliance alliance. Kira interrupted the wedding, extracting her to the Archangel. When Orb came under ZAFT attack, she inherited the ORB-01 Akatsuki Gundam from Uzumi, using it to lead Orb's defense, arrest Yuna, and reclaim her leadership role. Post-war, she remained in Orb to oversee reconstruction while allies continued fighting in space.
Later, Cagalli co-founded COMPASS, an organization promoting peace through intervention. She negotiated with ZAFT and the Earth Alliance during renewed conflicts involving the Kingdom of Foundation, which sought to impose a modified Destiny Plan. Her diplomatic efforts aimed at preserving Orb's neutrality and ideals.
In expanded media, Cagalli appeared in manga adaptations like *Mobile Suit Gundam SEED C.E.73 Δ Astray*, interacting with Martian visitors before her abduction during events of *SEED Destiny*. She also featured in video games such as *Mobile Suit Gundam SEED: Rengou vs. Z.A.F.T.*, piloting the Strike Rouge and Akatsuki.
