Description
Midori Kitakami serves as a crew member aboard the AAA Wunder in the paramilitary organization WILLE, operating sonar and radar systems. She possesses pale skin, large lips, and distinctive pink hair—a result of contact with rainbow-colored ooze from a Wanderer during her rescue near the Near Third Impact, which transformed her original brown hair.

Midori exhibits laziness and an intense fear of death, contrasting with colleagues. She habitually covers her control panel with sticky notes. This fear originates from fleeing her family’s city during the Near Third Impact, where she witnessed Failures of Infinity emerge and coreification destroy her home. She survived by climbing a hill, spending a night in a crashed NERV VTOL, and encountering Wanderers in a valley. Rescued by Mari Makinami Illustrious’s aircraft—carrying Asuka Shikinami Langley and Evangelion Unit 02α-EIV—Midori heard Asuka blame the catastrophe on "an idiot" (implied as Shinji Ikari) and urge her to fight if she wished to confront him. This motivated her to join WILLE.

During operations, Midori displays visible anger at Shinji Ikari’s appearance in WILLE’s control room. She voices opposition alongside crewmates against engaging the Nemesis series under Misato Katsuragi’s orders, explicitly refusing to risk death. Her fear resurfaces when questioning colleague Koji Takao’s fatalism.

Preceding Operation US, Midori exercises aboard a battleship while reflecting on her motivations, revealing her internal conflict about combat. In WILLE’s mission to prevent Additional Impact, she attempts to shoot Shinji with Sakura Suzuhara, blaming him for the Near Third Impact. Misato Katsuragi intercepts the bullet meant for Shinji.

Background elements from storyboards by Hidenori Matsubara for EVANGELION: 3.0 (-46h) included flashbacks of Midori’s parents, though these scenes were cut from the final release.
