Description
Azusa Hanani serves as captain and right fielder for Nishiura High School's baseball team, later becoming the cleanup hitter after the Musashino game. A first-year student in Class 7 born on April 28, he comes from a family with parents and twin younger sisters. Standing 181 cm tall and weighing 67 kg, he possesses regular, conventionally handsome features, though he shaves his head, often concealed under his baseball cap.

His baseball journey started in primary school, likely influenced by his mother, a devoted fan he watched games with from a young age. Serving as both cleanup hitter and captain during middle school proved an unpleasant experience, fueling his initial reluctance to join Nishiura's team. He doubted Coach Momoe's capabilities due to her gender, but her athletic prowess—hitting a near-vertical pop-fly and squeezing orange juice bare-handed—instantly earned his respect. His leadership qualities—reliability, self-awareness, helpfulness, and the courage to voice disagreements—led to his unanimous election as Nishiura's captain.

Hanai exhibits a level-headed, observant, and academically inclined personality, attending cram school after practice and excelling in complex strategy comprehension. He maintains polite manners, noted by Mihashi's mother, yet displays occasional rudeness toward his own mother, particularly when she embarrasses him by using his typically feminine given name "Azusa" or calling him "cute" in public. Despite this friction, they share a close bond centered on baseball, and his family actively supports his games. Within the team, he develops a significant inferiority complex toward teammate Tajima, whose superior batting skills initially undermine his confidence. Coach Momoe strategically fosters this rivalry for motivation, though Hanai's performance fluctuates based on Tajima's critiques or praise. Over time, he channels this into healthy competition, gradually gaining self-assurance. Teammates frequently tease him for his easily flustered reactions and struggles under pressure, especially in critical batting situations.

He bats and throws right-handed, wearing uniform number 9. Though cleanup hitter in middle school, he initially bats fifth at Nishiura, deferring to Tajima's superior batting accuracy. His standout skill is power hitting, demonstrated when he becomes the only first-year to hit a home run off Musashino's pitcher Haruna, leading to higher fences at Nishiura's field. Defensively, his strong throwing arm from right field proves decisive, notably securing victory against Tosei. He also serves as a relief pitcher and emergency catcher, though Coach Momoe notes his pitching lacks caliber for top-tier opponents and his catching lacks the strategic aggression of primary catcher Abe.

His relationships highlight his team role. He maintains a respectful dynamic with Coach Momoe, accompanying her to formal meetings and striving to meet expectations. Teammates frequently tease him—using his name's acronym as the clubroom lock password or dubbing the field fence "Hanai's fence"—yet respect his leadership. He actively ensures team discipline, curbing Tajima's antics, and supports classmates by honoring commitments like school festival preparations. His rivalry with Tajima evolves from one-sided envy to mutual respect, culminating in Tajima acknowledging envy over Hanai's physique enabling home runs.

Development unfolds through games. Insecurity around Tajima transforms into determined self-improvement, exemplified when Momoe risks placing him as cleanup hitter against powerhouse Senda despite Tajima's superior stats. Critical moments, like his game-winning throw against Tosei and his home run against Musashino, solidify his reputation and confidence. His leadership extends off the field, organizing group study sessions and ensuring team unity during Mihashi's birthday celebration.
