Description
Yagyou-san debuted as the Hyakki Yagyō leader in the 1980s manga *Saishinban GeGeGe no Kitarō*. Initially allied with Nurarihyon, he held a higher rank despite serving under him. Following a defeat in chapter 6, he joined the Kitarō Family. His original manga design was later reused for the character Jigoku-Musha in the third anime.
His role varies across anime adaptations. The 1985 series portrays him primarily as a yōkai inventor. The 2007 anime expands on this, showing him operating a research facility in Yōkai Yokochō, with his first major appearance in episode #7.
In the 2018 anime, Yagyou-san aids Kitarō and GeGeGe Forest yōkai against Western Yōkai threats in episode #28, "The Great Yōkai War." Later, he participates in a gathering discussing the Western Yōkai Agnès' presence in Japan, listening to arguments about coexistence. He is also seen reading a flier distributed by Nurarihyon advocating yōkai unity against humans.
His appearance evolved over time. Early manga depictions were repurposed for other anime characters, while his minions adopted his original look in later series.
Yagyou-san possesses abilities including Iron Skin for physical resilience, Physical Immortality, and the capacity to project Yōkai Energy Bolts. His equipment typically includes a sickle, dagger, and iron whip. He consistently rides a headless horse known as Kubikire-Uma.
Folklore referenced in the series describes Yagyou-san appearing on Setsubun nights in Tokushima Prefecture. Encounters are perilous, as his horse may kick victims to death. Protective measures include placing one's zōri sandals on the head and lying prone to avoid harm.
In broader yōkai lore beyond direct series depictions, Yagyou-san is sometimes linked to the *Hyakki Yagyō* parade, where supernatural entities traverse human realms, reinforcing his stature within yōkai hierarchies.
