Description
Kanji Sasahara is introduced as a freshman at Shiiou University, where he first encounters the Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture, known as the Genshiken, during a club recruitment event. Upon joining, he begins a four-year journey that sees him evolve from a shy and insecure newcomer into the club's third president and a central figure in its activities.
At the start of the series, Sasahara is portrayed as a young man struggling with a lack of confidence and a sense of denial about his own hobbies. He is just beginning to come to terms with his identity as an otaku, and much of the early narrative focuses on him learning to accept this part of himself. He has a particular fondness for hentai PC games, an interest that becomes more pronounced once he finally acquires a computer, an event that serves as a turning point in his self-acceptance. Although he often appears as a calm and level-headed individual, he can show open frustration when others lack motivation or act disruptively, as seen with fellow members like Mitsunori Kugayama and Manabu Kuchiki.
As Sasahara grows more comfortable with his otaku identity, his personality becomes more defined. He is generally considered the most well-balanced member of the Genshiken, lacking a hyper-specific focus in favor of a broad appreciation for otaku culture. This balance, combined with his polite and friendly nature, makes him a natural leader. When he assumes the presidency from Harunobu Madarame, one of his first major decisions is to push the club toward a new initiative: establishing their own booth at the biannual Comic-Fest convention. This leads to the Genshiken producing a doujinshi under his direction, which fittingly centers on Ritsubo Kubel Kettenkrad, a character from the fictional series Kujibiki Unbalance to whom Sasahara has an unwavering loyalty.
The role of president also marks a turning point in his personal development. While he never becomes entirely free of self-doubt, he transforms into a stronger-willed individual, capable of fighting his own hesitations to accomplish his goals. During his senior year, he steps down as president to dedicate himself to studying and job hunting, passing the title on to fellow member Ohno. This focus pays off when he successfully finds employment as a professional manga editor after graduation.
In his post-graduation life, Sasahara remains connected to the Genshiken, where he is in a relationship with Chika Ogiue, the girl who eventually takes over as club president. Their relationship is a significant part of his story; he musters the courage to confess his feelings to her, and he consistently supports her creative work by providing critical feedback as an unofficial editor, sometimes even acting as a model for her doujinshi, despite the potential risks this could pose to their romance. His role thus shifts from the primary point-of-view character to a supporting figure, but one whose growth from a timid freshman to a confident professional forms a core part of the series' exploration of otaku life.
